One of the most memorable aspects of Slime Rancher is the relationship between Beatrix LeBeau and Casey, as, although their in-person interactions are never seen, it still sticks with you long after the credits roll. Unlike some of the other characters that Beatrix does properly see and interact with, the only mode of communication that she has with Casey is through Starmail, which helps add to the intrigue of their story.

Because of the level of ambiguity that comes with a character like Casey, who forms a major part of Beatrix’s past, questions naturally arise regarding the details of them as a person.
Who Is Casey?
Casey is a loved one who Beatrix had to leave behind on Earth to tackle her new job as a Slime Rancher on a planet called Far, Far Range. To keep the mystery behind the character open to interpretation for the player, developer Monomi Park confirmed that Casey is gender-neutral, but it is clear that they shared a deep bond with Beatrix before she decided to move planets.
The very first email that Beatrix receives from Casey shows that it has been an entire year on Earth since they last interacted in person, as they ask the protagonist plenty of questions regarding their overall experience with intergalactic travel.
Even after so much time has passed, Casey still seems to deeply care about Beatrix, wishing her the best on her new journey and hoping that everything goes smoothly for her.
On Earth, Casey tries holding onto anything that they can find to remember Beatrix, an example being heading to her plant shop and adopting a cactus. While Beatrix chose to become a rancher, Casey found their passion in making music, leading them to tour across various locations, ranging from cities in the United States of America to London.

With each email, more details are revealed about the memories that Casey and Beatrix created together, ranging from getting stuck in a coffee shop on a cold rainy night to going hiking, the latter of which Casey was not really fond of.
The two characters also went on tour together once, with Casey being totally fine with a broken van, and although Beatrix did not really like the mode of transport, she was always there to support her lover.
The Relationship And Memories Between Casey And Beatrix
Despite Casey being an outgoing artist who loves to go to social gatherings, they would much rather spend some quality time alone with Beatrix, an example of which comes up during the New Year’s Eve email. The relationship between the two characters is subtly described as romantic, while other details, such as Casey’s sentimental nature towards Beatrix, occasionally come up in various messages.

The two were first separated for quite some time when Beatrix presumably went on her trip to Africa and Casey went on tour to London, during which they tried their best to keep the relationship going even with such a huge distance between them. However, when they did reunite, they had a conversation and chose to pursue their individual paths instead of lying to each other just to stay together.
Unfortunately, Casey seems to have some massive regrets regarding how they handled the situation, mentioning that they should have made their feelings of love towards Beatrix clearer than they managed to.
Perhaps they feel like their London tour was the catalyst behind Beatrix’s decision to pursue her own career as a rancher on another planet, leading them to reevaluate their own life and look back at how they could have handled things differently.
What Happened To Casey?
Although Casey would have liked to stay in a loving relationship with Beatrix, they made peace with their scenario after thinking long and hard about it. They bear no hard feelings towards Beatrix, wanting them to succeed as a Slime Rancher and have the best time possible on Far, Far Range, even if it means they can’t be together.
They were genuinely happy in just getting to know Beatrix as deeply as they did, and as they tried to move on with their life and build their own career as a musician, it was revealed that they had another tour coming up, which could finally be their big break.
Of course, Beatrix is still the person who is always on their mind, hoping to catch just one glance of her somehow, despite knowing that their wish is probably not going to come true anytime soon.
The end credits song is performed by Chelsea Lee Greenwood, but it isn’t supposed to be Casey’s actual voice, as confirmed by the developer.
Sadly, that reunion never comes to fruition, as Beatrix decides to carry on with her life as a Slime Rancher, and aside from an end credits song detailing the two lovers’ feelings, Casey’s eventual fate is left open to interpretation without any real closure.
