The two IT films followed Bill Skarsgard as the killer clown Pennywise as he haunted a group of children in the town of Derry in 1988 and then again when they were adults in 2016. As was established in King’s novel, It rises every 27 years to attack, and IT: Welcome to Derry plans to reveal another time the murderous clown went on a rampage. The chosen period for the HBO series is 1962, aka the cycle before the one shown in the first IT film. The cast of the series includes Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, and James Remar, with Skarsgard reprising his role as Pennywise and serving as an executive producer.

IT: Welcome To Derry Has A Three-Season Plan

Another face returning to the IT franchise with Welcome to Derry is Andy Muschietti, the director of both the most recent IT films and one of the creators behind the new series. IT: Welcome to Derry is set to debut in 2025, but Muschietti is already looking beyond the first season based on a recent conversation he had with Radio TU. As reported by Bloody Disgusting, the producer revealed that the team has three seasons planned for IT: Welcome to Derry, each taking place in a different time period. “So the first season is 1962, the second season is 1935, and the third season is 1908,” Muschiettit said, adding that there is a reason the series is being told backward.

The producer added that each series will center on a “catastrophic event” that occurs around the time of Pennywise’s re-emergence. Some of the events Muschietti mentioned that the series will cover during its timeline included the fire in the Black Spot (which affected Mike Hanlon’s father, William), the massacre of the Bradley Gang, and the explosion of the Kitchener Ironworks. Given this planned structure, it seems likely that IT: Welcome to Derry will adopt an almost anthology style, with new characters in each season that are linked by these visits from Pennywise. It’s worth noting that HBO has not officially greenlit IT: Welcome to Derry beyond one season, but should it be received well there is a clear roadmap for where the series goes next.

Skarsgard recently addressed any concerns that IT would be toned down for its transition to television, reiterating that Welcome to Derry is hardcore. IT: Welcome to Derry doesn’t yet have a premiere date, but is expected to debut on HBO’s slate later in the year, after other originals like The White Lotus and The Last of Us finish their seasons.
