Ranging from spaces where players are confined to a chair to open fields, this season thrusts players into many different scenarios which pit them against each other, as well as against the game creators in new and inventive ways. The games stay true to their child-like nature; however, if players lose, the consequences are dire.

Bread Or LotteryBread or Lottery game from The Recruiter in Squid Game Season 2.

The first unofficial game seen in this season of Squid Game is Bread or Lottery. The Recruiter buys 100 pieces of bread and 100 scratch-offs, and goes to the park to offer one or the other to homeless people.

Although this is a rather simplistic, on the surface almost nice thing to do, it’s harsh because if The Recruiter wanted to help them out, he would obviously just give them both. Instead, he uses the game to teach people a lesson that greed is wrong, and in The Recruiter’s eyes, perhaps he’s making an artistic statement of sorts, or perhaps he’s just fueling his dark, awful side.

This is all at the expense of the people who overwhelmingly choose the lottery ticket. He proceeds to stomp on all the bread left over and leaves the area, so this is a short, crude game, but still a game nonetheless.

Rock, Paper, Scissors, Minus OneRock, Paper, Scissors, Minus One game in Squid Game Season 2.

Another pre-Squid Game game, Rock, Paper Scissors, Minus One is what The Recruiter decided to do with the two men following him. Instead of just killing them, he forces them to play this heightened version of rock, paper, scissors where players play with both hands.

Russian Roulette

Russian Roulette between The Recruiter and Seong Gi-hun in Squid Game Season 2.

If you thought Rock, Paper, Scissors, Minus one was intense, get a load of the complete game of Russian Roulette between Seong Gi-hun and The Recruiter. It’s a thrilling showdown where both players talk to each other face to face about the previous games, and The Recruiter talked about killing his father.

The game is the most pivotal of the games before the actual Squid Games, because Seong Gi-hun could have easily died. It is a fascinating scene because Seong Gi-hun could easily just shoot The Recruiter, pulling the trigger multiple times to make sure he fired the bullet.

The Recruiter tells this to Seong Gi-hun saying, “You can simply shoot me with that gun” and take the key inside his jacket. But if he did that, he would be “…a piece of trash, just like everyone else.” Before The Recruiter pulls the final trigger, ending his life, Seong Gi-hun tells him, “You’re nothing more than their dog.”

Special Game

Special Game in Squid Game Season 2 where players attack each other at night before the last day's game.

The “special game” as announced by the voice heard overhead, is yet another unofficial game which takes place once the remaining players are down to 95. The guards are standing by, knowing full well that the special game means players will attack each other.

8 Games Where The Villain Is A Concept, Not A Person

The biggest bad guy: emotions

Once the lights went out, and players were supposed to be asleep, the ‘game’ began where the people who voted to continue moved to attack the people who voted to leave.

Players had forks from dinner, and although the fighting didn’t last long, 20 players were killed, and it gave Seong Gi-hun and his team a chance to surprise the soldiers and steal their weapons, officially starting the plan to rebel and hopefully end the Squid Game.

3

Six-Legged Pentathalon

Six legged pentathlon where a group of five characters including Gi-hun celebrates.

The Pentathlon involves groups of five players being tied together at their ankles. As a group, they either all survive or they all die. Each player must win one game out of five and the team cannot move until each game is won.

The games individually are as follows:

  1. Ddakji – This is the same game that started the whole Squid Game, where one player must throw their square tile onto the other tile and try to flip it over.
  2. Flying Stone – Simple but stressful if you miss. Players throw a stone at another specific stone, and if they miss, as a group, they must all march over to retrieve the stone and go back to the starting line.
  3. Gong-gi – This game involves five stones or plastic pieces where players toss the stones to themselves and catch them in increasing patterns so that the final round consists of the player catching all five stones.
  4. Spinning Top – The hardest and most stressful part of this game seemed to be the winding part, where players had to wind a string around a top and once it was all the way wound up, they had to toss it down in a way that made it spin.
  5. Jegi – Similar to a hacky sack, the player must kick the jegi up in the air at least five times before crossing the finish line.

This game is a true test of teamwork, as characters ranging from “The Front Man” to Seon-Nyeo (the shaman) all had moments where they panicked and broke down. It is up to each of the five teammates to deliver under pressure in these intricate, high-intensity moments.

2

Mingle

Overhead shot of the game Mingle happening in Squid Game season 2.

On the surface, Mingle looks really straightforward. Hop on the carousel, listen to the spooky kid music, find a group quickly, then run into one of the rooms before the timer runs out. However, it’s called mingle because players must talk and strategize with fellow players.

The announcer says a number, and then players must form a group with that amount of people. They then turn to face the frantic, screaming players all trying to successfully ‘mingle,’ attempting to make their way to an open room.

The game gets more and more intense as the numbers keep changing, so that in the final round, when the group number of two is called, and there are only 50 rooms available, and more than 100 players remaining (126) it becomes very contested. It’s a fascinating look into what people do in a high-pressure situation, as everyone sprints to secure a room with just one other person.

1

Red Light, Green Light

Red Light, Green Light over looking the motion sensor in Squid Game Season 2.

The classic game associated with Squid Game – Red Light, Green Light. It was in the first season, and it made its triumphant return this season, accompanied by Seong Gi-hun desperately trying to warn everybody about the consequences. The nostalgia alone would rank Red Light, Green Light high on this list, but there is also so much more to consider with this game in the new season.

Compared to last season’s Red Light, Green Light round one death count of 255, this season, a total of 91 people died at the eyes of the murderous robot doll. This raised the total to 9.1 billion won accumulated, leaving 24,931,500 won for each person, equal to roughly $17,000 USD.

Although this is a decent amount of money for having narrowly escaped death, for some of these people, who can’t fathom a life beyond their crippling debt, even for how scary and traumatic Red Light, Green Light was and is, it still wasn’t enough to convince the majority to vote to leave, thanks to “The Front Man” pushing the vote to stay and play.

Because of how this game raises the stakes dramatically in both seasons, and because of how it sets the tone for the rest of the show, coupled with how horrifyingly smart and simple this game is, it’s obvious to see why it was brought back.
