Palworld: Feybreak - How To Unlock Chests Without Keys

Palworld is an open-world survival-crafting game that features countless cute monsters called Pals. The game features many craftable items, but some of the schematics to craft these items are found inside chests. These chests are usually locked and require a key, but always carrying around a key can be a challenge of its own.

Luckily, the game offers you lockpicking tools that you can craft to avoid sacrificing inventory slots for different types of keys. Here’s how you can obtain the lockpicking tools and you’ll never have to bother with different types of keys in the game again.

There are three different types of lockpicking tools, each allowing you to open a different type of locked chest. You only have to carry one of each. These items are unlocked at different levels in the Technology menu and require Ancient Technology Points to unlock.

You will have to unlock the preceding tool sets first before you can move on to the later ones. Otherwise, you’ll get the “Prerequisites unobtained” message in the Technology menu and will be unable to unlock the required item.

You only have to craft each type of lockpicking tool only once. These are Key Items, and they won’t show up in the normal section of your inventory and will also not take up any inventory space.

The image shows that a chest requiring a Gold Key has been successfully unlocked with lockpicking in Palworld.

Similar to using keys, you have to approach a corresponding type of locked chest, and you’ll be presented with two options. You can either choose to unlock the chest with a key, or you can attempt lockpicking. You can pick the lockpicking option even if you don’t have any keys in your inventory.

Once the lockpicking sequence starts, you can try as many times as you need till you get the hang of it. There aren’t any penalties for failure, and you can try different angles till you finally end up unlocking the chest.

How Lockpicking Works

The image shows that the player has failed to unlock a chest requiring a Gold Key with lockpicking and is about to try again in Palworld.

The game gives you two tools to control simultaneously. One of the tools is a pick, which can be turned in any direction from 0 to 180 degrees. The other tool is a knife, which is used to turn the lock once you’ve rotated the pick.

You have to rotate the pick and then move the other tool to turn the lock. If your angle is correct, the lock will be able to turn completely to the left, and the chest will be unlocked. If the angle is incorrect, the lock will shake while you’re rotating the lock and the pick will break, and then you’ll have to start over.

The higher the rarity of the chest, the more challenging it will be to unlock it. Gold chests are the most difficult to lockpick, and it can take some time to find the lock’s sweet spot, but you just have to repeatedly check by moving one of the picks slightly to see where it clicks.

Try rotating the pick at different angles until you find the spot where you can turn the lock more towards the left. If the lock only turns slightly more to the left and the pick ends up breaking, it’s a clear sign that you’re close to the correct angle and only have to make a tiny adjustment to the pick’s angle.
