  • NIKKE will launch in China under the title Goddess of Victory: New Hope to adhere to the country’s regulatory requirements.
  • Notable adjustments include changes to character designs, with outfits being altered for more conservative appearances.
  • The Chinese version of the game is now available for pre-registration, with its official release date yet to be announced.

Goddess of Victory: NIKKE, the popular mobile game developed by Shift Up, is preparing for its debut in China under a modified title, Goddess of Victory: New Hope. The game is now available for pre-registration, and from the looks of it, the game is expectedly heavily censored to meet China’s regulatory requirements and cater to the audience of the region.

Goddess of Victory: New Hope will release in China with a few changes to the original title

Goddess of Victory: NIKKE is a visually stunning sci-fi RPG shooter that blends fast-paced action with immersive storytelling. Developed by Shift Up, the studio renowned for their work on Stellar Blade, and published by Level Infinite, the game introduces players to a post-apocalyptic world overrun by mechanical foes. The China release looks to have the same universe, although a few changes are expected.

In the character introduction section given on the website for the game, you can notice the censorship in action. I’ll make a comparison between the Chinese version and the global version of Anis. In the global version, Anis has a more revealing outfit, with noticeable skin exposure around her chest and thighs, emphasizing the character’s original design style.

However, the Chinese version introduces a more conservative appearance, featuring additional fabric coverage over these areas. The top is modified to reduce chest exposure, and the shorts are replaced with longer, less form-fitting attire. The same was followed for two other characters showcased: Rabbi and Nien. China’s regulatory standards for character designs in games have been strict for a long time, and with this, they continue the trend.

NIKKE won’t be the only game undergoing such censorship. Previously, we had another RPG titled Blue Archive from fellow South Korean developer Nexon released in China a couple of years after the worldwide release. Similar censorship hits happened to Neural Cloud and Azur Lane a couple of years ago.

Although China has strict censorship and rules for minors to combat addiction, last year it was noted that South Korea’s major gaming companies see a bright future in China following increased license approvals. If you are from the region, you can head to the game’s official website to pre-register for the game. The official launch date hasn’t been revealed yet, so stay tuned in this space for updates.
