In that decade-and-a-half, it’s also been continuously updated with new content and features, and has looked to stick around as it is permanently with no sequel in sight.

While Mojang’s version of Minecraft seems like it’ll always remain as it is, it looks like the game’s original creator, Notch, wanted to take things further and basically build a sequel to it. The controversial former figurehead of Minecraft announced his intent to develop what would essentially be Minecraft 2 less than a week ago, but it seems that plans have already been pushed back.
Minecraft Creator Puts Spiritual Sequel Plans On Ice
As reported by 80 Level, Notch recently took to Twitter to announce that he and his team at Bitshift Entertainment were no longer going to be pursuing a Minecraft sequel and that they were instead going to focus on development for Levers and Chests. Notch said that the tipping point was “PC Gamer saying it seemed interesting”.
Notch further elaborated on his choice to focus on Lever and Chests when a fan replied to his tweet saying that they felt “betrayed”. The Minecraft creator reassured fans that a spiritual successor would be “way less fun” than Levers and Chests and noted that they’re usually just sad nostalgia dumps.
When asked if Minecraft 2 is still going to be a thing one day, Notch said that fans will have to ask Microsoft about that. It seems that the result of the Twitter poll is also why the team isn’t pursuing a sequel, as Notch pointed out that they would have given it a shot if the results were “significantly more biased” towards the successor.
