Marvel Rivals has a ludicrous number of characters to choose from, with four more newly introduced characters in Season 1, but that hasn’t stopped modders from doing what they do best. Ever since the launch of Marvel Rivals last year, we’ve seen all sorts of weird and wonderful mods, with the more popular ones either altering or replacing skins for existing characters.
That’s how modders have managed to get characters like Riku and Sora from Kingdom Hearts into the game, as well as a bunch of DC superheroes too. Of course, there are also the less wholesome mods out there, making the game’s caked-up character even cakier, but most projects have been super creative.

Unfortunately, it seems as though Marvel Rivals developer NetEase hasn’t been as big of a fan of these modding projects, as a new update introduced with Season 1 appears to have killed them all off. According to Marvel Rivals dataminer X0X_LEAK, a new system called “asset hash checking” was added, which has essentially stopped all mods working until a workaround is found.
Marvel Rivals Season 1 Has Killed Custom Skin Mods
We don’t know exactly why NetEase has decided to crack down on mods – and likely never will – but we can make a good guess. For starters, the developers probably don’t appreciate some of the raunchier mods out there, and any potential controversies surrounding a game that is marketed towards children is something that NetEase just doesn’t want to risk.
There’s also the fact that we’ve already seen a mod controversy pop up recently, with modding site Nexus Mods having released a statement surrounding anger over the banning of a Captain America Trump mod. It’s these kinds of online controversies that NetEase just wants to avoid entirely, especially with the game making waves.
Of course, modders will do what modders do and will eventually find workarounds, but this is a sign that NetEase isn’t best pleased with mods being used at all. It’s already proven it’s a little trigger-happy with the bans, so best to just stick to the vanilla experience rather than find yourself banned entirely. Your caked-up Venom mod probably isn’t worth it.
