Is Medieval Dynasty Better Than Sengoku Dynasty?

Do you love living out a simulated life from a historical period? There are two recent games set in two distinct time periods. The first is Medieval Dynasty, which follows your journey in the Middle Ages of Europe. The second is Sengoku Dynasty, which occurred in Japan during the warring states period.

These RPGs take you back to the medieval period.

Both games follow a similar idea: they combine a survival crafting simulator with economy management and fighting enemies, from wild animals to invading marauders. However, their approaches to this gameplay style differ, and there are some aspects in which one does better than the other.

8

Feeling Of Progression – Medieval Dynasty

Both games get you started very similarly, where your character struggles to survive in the wild and find the means to gather enough items and materials to make a better society. Pretty soon, you’ll go from having to fight certain animals and avoiding bears to developing a full-blown village.

As with many games, progressing from the beginning towards where you want to be can take tremendous time and effort. However, you can tell how far you’ve gone in your journey, and hundreds of hours will pass when you see the fruits of your labor as your community develops with all manners of fully functioning facilities and working NPCs.

7

Graphical Performance – Medieval Dynasty

Medieval Dynasty was launched in September 2021 and has undergone several updates and graphical improvements since then. As a result, players can run well-performing sessions on fairly beefy computers for long periods of time.

Sengoku Dynasty is relatively new, so some issues and bugs must be addressed, especially when combat is a concern. This also goes hand in hand with the complexity of the world map. Whether Sengoku Dynasty’s performance improves is only a matter of time via invested updates whenever they come.

Presentation Of The Time Period – Tie

This is more of a player-preference scenario. Do you like the atmosphere of medieval Europe or Feudal Japan? Regardless, both games execute this very well in placing you in the setting and giving you all the tools you’ll need to survive and thrive in these turbulent time periods.

The tools, houses, and furnishings you can create in both these games are based on historical accuracies of how things looked in their respective time periods, and all the different parts of each home are intricate in their details. It truly feels like you’re a part of the feudal communities in the period.

5

Combat – Sengoku Dynasty

Sengoku Dynasty adopts the souls-like battle system of games like the titular Dark Souls and Elden Ring. This fighting system is unique for a survival management game and offers speed and efficiency in combat moments. Like the other soul-like action games, there’s locking on enemies, whittling their health down while watching your stamina and avoiding being overwhelmed by numbers.

Medieval Dynasty’s combat isn’t as complex or full of dynamics as in Kingdom Come Deliverance, but it is more in line with the striking/blocking style of combat from the Elder Scrolls series, like Skyrim. Like those games, the pace in the combat is more subdued than the fast pace in Sengoku Dynasty.

4

Story And Quests – Medieval Dynasty

Both games have a similar setup storywise. Basically, your character survives the destruction of your former home and is driven to an empty chunk of land, where your mission is to survive and establish a thriving settlement. After that, the “story” is your own playthrough as you develop your community and bring in NPCs to populate homes and ensure jobs and business.

Medieval Dynasty does a great job of expanding the idea of a story in its setting by maintaining a flow of quests, side missions, and randomly generated activities that keep you invested in the playthrough. Multiplayer also gives much more, as you can get invested in the lives and relationships of the other player characters in your world.

3

Village Management And Customization – Tie

Both games involve developing your plot of land into a fully functioning village, with NPCs doing all the jobs you assign to them. Watching your communities grow is the main draw and charm of these two different experiences, from forging jobs and homes for your people to growing crops and raising livestock.

From the designs of the homes and buildings to the way you can recruit NPCs for certain tasks, Medieval Dynasty, and Sengoku Dynasty do a great job of giving you the options, freedoms, and space to create your ideal village, whether you desire to recreate a historical site or want to build your own historical home.

2

Character Creator – Medieval Dynasty

Medieval Dynasty offers many diverse options for creating your unique character. From hairstyles and colors to facial features. The options you can make for your character creation cover most of the basics, with multiple ways to make your character as unique as possible.

Sengoku Dynasty sadly lacks options, and the game doesn’t have the same depth of character creation. There are very few options for hairstyles and facial hair. After that, there’s not much else, and you name your character afterward.

1

Conclusion – Medieval Dynasty

Medieval Dynasty had much more time to improve its gameplay and perfect the issues from the initial launch. Character creators are diverse in options, and the progress of your village’s agricultural development has enough freedom that every new playthrough will invite all kinds of unique circumstances.

Medieval Dynasty beats Sengoku Dynasty due to the polish and options brought to players who are fans of the survival and town management simulator genre. Between Medieval and Sengoku Dynasty choices, Medieval is definitely the winner, and it’s a great place to get started if you’re a new fan of this genre.
