2024 ending means Hello Kitty‘s 50th anniversary year is now over. Don’t be down about that for too long though as in its place 2025 has brought with it two more Sanrio milestones. My Melody also turns 50 this year while her frenemy Kuromi will celebrate her 20th anniversary, and to celebrate, the pair will be starring in their very own stop-motion series on Netflix.
Netflix dropped the first teaser for My Melody & Kuromi on Thursday, revealing that the project will start streaming on the platform in July 2025. The teaser is only ten seconds long so doesn’t give away much about the show. Still, it’s enough to demonstrate it will revolve around the core premise of Kuromi and My Melody’s slightly awkward relationship.

My Melody has spent the past 20 years, the entirety of Kuromi’s run, believing she and Kuromi are best friends. However, Kuromi doesn’t share that sentiment and believes them to be enemies. The teaser shows a fuzzy stop motion My Melody looking so happy that she has hearts for eyes before cutting to Kuromi who in contrast looks suitably peeved, sitting in a chair that appears to be modeled after her own design.
Kuromi And My Melody Are Getting Their Own Buddy Stop Motion Show
Coming To Netflix This July
While this will be a first foray into stop motion for Toruku, the studio behind My Melody & Kuromi, Tomoki Misato, the director attached, has previous experience. Misato directed Pui Pui Molcar, a somewhat bizarre but very entertaining and cute stop-motion series currently available on Netflix. I happen to have watched quite a bit of Pui Pui Molcar thanks to my five-year-old son and it’s worth checking out while you wait for My Melody & Kuromi to arrive on the platform this summer.
My Melody & Kuromi’s style looks very similar to the animation style used for Pokemon Concierge. Not just because they’re both stop motion, but also because the characters and their surroundings are made of fuzzy fabric. Concierge is also on Netflix and was such a big hit that a second season is in the works. Sanrio wanting some of that, and Netflix wanting more of it, makes a lot of sense.
Sanrio has hit the ground running in 2025, not only via the reveal of a new Netflix show but also quite a bit of merch that’s already been revealed during the first ten days of the year. Loungefly has released a new Hello Kitty collection that features the lead mascot, the two stars of the new Netflix show, and various others from Sanrio’s roster.
