Dragon Age: 13 Hardest Decisions In The Games

Dragon Age is filled with tough choices, and that makes for some pretty interesting outcomes. These decisions were too tough to make.

The only downside of this wonderfully built world is that it can be hard to keep track of everyone. Every player has their favourites, but every character is someone’s favourite. By the end of the game, many of the companions have gone their separate ways, so it’s more important than ever to keep in touch. Here’s a brief reminder of their details and stories while the fans are waiting for Dragon Age: 4.

Updated January 6, 2025 by Tom Hopkins: Dragon Age: The Veilguard is now out, and many of the characters have made their returns for the fourth mainline game. If you’re returning to the previous game, you may want to see how the cast have changed over the years.

The Inquisitor

Category

Details

Age

This is up to the player’s discretion, but at least 18 and at least old/young enough to be combat-ready without being too old/young.

Birthday

Inquisition begins in 9:41 Dragon, so – assuming the protagonist is at least 18 years old – 9:23 Dragon or earlier.

Height

Between 4′ and 7′, based on information about the maximum racial heights.

The player character in Inquisition is a purposefully blank slate for the gamer to design as they choose. More character customization options appear than ever before with beards for female Dwarves, racially specific tattoos, and an entirely new playable race – the Qunari.

Corypheus, The Elder One

Dragon Age Corypheus Cropped

Category

Details

Age

Never stated, but he claims to be one of the magisters who reached the Golden City in the Fade, from which the Chantry claims the Darkspawn were created, subsequently found the ancient God Dumat, and started the first blight in the year -395 Ancient. Finding Dumat would have taken time and we don’t know at what age he entered the Golden City, but if we’re generous and say he was 20, he would still be at least 1,376 years old.

Birthday

Never stated.

Height

Never stated, but assumed to be approximately 8’2″ in his post-Darkspawn form.

Corypheus is the primary antagonist of Inquisition. Over the course of the game, fans discovered that he was part of an old chantry story explaining the creation of Darkspawn. The story goes that thousands of years ago, several of the most powerful Tevinter mages known as magisters entered the Fade and reached the seat of the Maker.

The chantry claims that attempting to find the Golden City was a sin of pride, which turned it into the Black City and sent the magisters back into the world as the mangled first Darkspawn. Corypheus, on the other hand, claims that, upon reaching the Golden City, the magisters found its throne empty. Until now, Corypheus had been trapped in a Grey Warden prison – but, newly freed, he’s looking to restore Tevinter to its former glory.

Born approximately 9:11 Dragon with no real date given but, when asked by Josephine’s messenger once the player reaches Skyhold, he replies that it has “already passed”. The full base game takes place over one full year, so we may be able to assume that his birthday is early in the year.

Height

Never stated, but speculated based on in-game references to be about 6’1″.

Cullen Rutherford is one of the few characters to appear in all three Dragon Age games. In Dragon Age: Origins, the Hero meets him in Ferelden’s Circle of Magi where he was serving as a templar. In DAII, Cullen has been promoted to Knight-Captain and transferred to Kirkwall. There, he ultimately helped take down Meredith who had gone mad with power.

Her family was once a naval powerhouse in Antiva, but bad luck and Rivaini pirates ultimately forced them into exile and crippled their fortune. Now, Josephine serves as an ambassador and diplomatic advisor to the Inquisitor.

Birthday

Never stated.

Height

Never stated, but assumed to be approximately 6’2″ because he’s visibly taller than many other characters.

Blackwall began life as Thom Rainier, a man from the Free Marches. He was a skilled warrior at a young age, winning the Grand Tourney in his youth with the help of an Orlesian Chevalier. The Chevalier offered to mentor Thom after he’d won, but Thom refused. He squandered his winnings and was forced to take up mercenary work and then join the Orlesian Imperial Army.

Thom and his squadron of men got caught up in Court politics and ended up killing innocent civilians. For this, Thom would have been executed – if not for the Grey Warden Blackwall who recruited Thom into the order. But when Blackwall died and Thom had no proof that he’d been recruited, he feared the Grey Wardens would assume he’d murdered Blackwall. So, he took Blackwall’s identity and began wandering the country – trying to honour his memory – when he is met by the Inquisition’s party.

Details

Age

The original cole died at age 12-13, and a character estimates him to now be approximately 21.

Birthday

Never stated

Height

Never stated, but assumed to be approximately 5’9″.

The original Cole was a human apostate mage that befriended a spirit of compassion when he was around 12 years old. Unfortunately, Cole’s father learned of his magical abilities and attempted to kill the child, but Cole killed him first. He was arrested by templars and tossed into a dungeon to be sadly and utterly forgotten. Young Cole ultimately starved to death.

The spirit of compassion, unable to help him, instead became Cole. This is the entity that the player meets in Inquisition – one with the memories and personality of the original Cole, but the soul of a Fade creature. Neither human nor spirit.

Iron Bull, The Qunari Spy

Category

Details

Age

Never stated, but he is known to have been recruited by the original Blackwall in 9:36, making him at least 25, but assumed to be in his early 40s.

Birthday

In the Trespasser DLC, if the Chargers survived, they ask the Inquisitor for their help to give The Iron Bull a birthday present; it appears to be summertime in Orlais, so his birthday is probably mid-year.

Height

Never stated, but assumed to be 7′-7’5″, depending on whether you count his horns.

As the first Qunari companion since Sten (who was written before the race was properly fleshed out), Iron Bull’s character fills in a lot of gaps about Qunari that the fans have had since Dragon Age II. He was born into the Qun where children are taken away from their family, raised communally, and assigned an appropriate job when they reach adulthood.

Though Bull was strong, he was assessed to be too disobedient to be a good soldier. Thus, he was inducted as a Ben-Hassrath – a branch of the Qunari priesthood dedicated to protecting the faith. He worked as a spy, smuggler, and in other jobs until he was reassigned to go undercover in Orlais. This is where he founded his own mercenary company: The Bull’s Chargers. When the Inquisition rises to power, The Iron Bull is ordered to reach out and offer his help in exchange for information.

Height

Never stated, but assumed to be approximately 5’5″.

Sera is a young Elven woman who detests most other Elves. Denouncing them as too “Elfy,” she hates talking about a shared Elven experience, Elven history, or the disadvantages that Elves face in modern Thedas. As an orphaned child, she was adopted by a human woman in Ferelden who psychologically abused her.

After her adopted mother died, Sera rejected any inheritance and instead joined the “Friends of Red Jenny”, a web of interconnected lower class people who assassinate, steal from, and generally pester their wealthy abusers — often giving profits back to the poor. This web of friends makes Sera a valuable addition to the Inquisitor’s party.

Unlike Sera, he is unabashedly Elven, but he shares Sera’s disdain for modern Elves as he considers them to be blindly worshipping what scraps of their culture they have left.

Though he claims to have joined the Inquisition after witnessing the creation of the Breach, players discover by the end of the game that he is actually an Elven historical figure known as Fen’harel, the trickster God or “Dread Wolf.” Players expect to chase him down and pull more answers about his plans from him in Dragon Age: 4… if they can forgive his hat from the Winter Palace.

When the Inquisition arrived, then, she offered to guide their forces through the area. Officer Charter saw her potential and recruited her! Mother Giselle is a Revered Mother of the Chantry who was close with Divine Justinia V. She was the head of her Chantry during the fifth blight and earned renown for her work with the Fereldan refugees. Giselle opened the food stores to the community in the belief that their faith would sustain them, but this displeased the Chantry heads in Val Royeaux. When they sent Giselle food, she was told to distribute it first to the clerics then to Orlesian peasants then to the Fereldan refugees and, lastly, to the Elves in the alienage. Giselle famously refused these instructions.

In Inquisition, Mother Giselle helps Cassandra, Leliana, and the Inquisitor by rallying clerics for the cause, treating refugees in Haven, and otherwise acting in her religious duties based out of Skyhold.
