Broadly speaking, there are two types of zombie games. In column A, we have Resident Evil and The Last of Us, highly choreographed, self-serious affairs that prioritize careful item management, rich atmosphere, and scripted scares. And in column B, it’s State of Decay, Dying Light, and, to a lesser extent, Project Zomboid. Here, it’s more about freedom and fun. Rather than caution, you play with style. The gore is plentiful and the undead come in hordes. Originally released all the way back in 1998, the same year that Half-Life gifted us the iconic headcrab monsters, one zombie classic feels like it falls somewhere in the middle, and now it’s getting a huge new remake. Welcome back to The House of the Dead 2.
A rail shooter and FPS game, House of the Dead 2 has plenty of set pieces, but it’s also a total blast – it’s garish and gleeful, and has some of the greatest blood splatters in zombie game history. The main villain, Goldman, also has to be seen (or rather heard) to be believed. Nowadays we’re used to prestige production values and photorealistic graphics, but voice performances like Goldman’s capture perfectly the unique, schlocky videogame aesthetic. I miss the era of pure, arcade trash.
But now, The House of the Dead 2 is coming back. Produced by Forever Entertainment, the same team that revived ‘90s sci-fi horror game Fear Effect, The House of the Dead 2 Remake is a complete overhaul of the 1998 original. New visuals, new effects, new environments – this is a top-to-bottom remake. Check it out in the video below.
Complete with both single-player and co-op modes, we’re still waiting on a precise release date, but The House of the Dead 2 Remake is provisionally scheduled for Spring 2025.
In the meantime, check out some of the other best upcoming PC games, or maybe the best co-op games available on PC today.
