Not much is known about Grand Theft Auto 6, but that hasn’t stopped audiences from being relentlessly hyped about it. Indeed, Rockstar has the benefit of prestige and history on its side, so the less that audiences know about GTA 6, the better, in some ways; its mystique only makes it more alluring.

Having said that, 2023’s GTA 6 reveal trailer gave a cursory look at the game’s story and setting, which both seem promising so far. It’ll still be interesting to see how the game’s overall tone slots in with the rest of the series—if it will be more like the sober and dark GTA 4 or the irreverent GTA 5, for example. Certain moments in the trailer suggest it will share more DNA with the latter, though. Specifically, the ostensible focus on social media, which is inherently absurd in many ways, seems like fertile ground for satirical storytelling. But for this concept to reach its full potential, social media should be more than a background element or fodder for cheap jokes; it should be something that can directly impact the player.

In both Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, the player is likely to experience any number of bizarre encounters while exploring the open-world. In GTA 5, these encounters can be anything from stopping petty crimes to helping criminals escape the police. But Red Dead Redemption 2 takes these events to the next level, thrusting the player into all manner of humorous, unsettling, or shocking scenarios at any given point. The key element that separates these encounters from regular side activities is surprise: players don’t expect these happenings, which makes them feel all the more realistic, outlandish though they may often be. They help the open-world feel dynamic.

It’s not hard to imagine how GTA 6 could take a unique angle on such random events through the tool of social media. Assuming players can interact with the game’s version of Twitter, TikTok, et cetera, it would be interesting to see their online choices unfold in the overworld. This would allow GTA 6‘s random events to retain the element of surprise, but with an additional layer of familiarity, making them more memorable and tailored to each player. Moreover, it would give players more reason to engage with these theoretical in-game social media platforms.

How Social-Media-Based Random Encounters Could Work in GTA 6

If GTA 6 does feature some sort of interactive social media system, even if it’s fairly barebones, it would be gratifying for players’ decisions on these platforms to translate into character-specific events in the game world. For instance, if the player has some online conflict or rivalry with an NPC, maybe the latter could confront them in the open-world. Real life has many examples of online influencer beef leading to real-world altercations, wherein one party assaults or attempts to embarrass the other, so this could be reflected in-game. Another potential outcome could lean further into the inherent absurdity of social media, with an NPC catching wind of the player-character’s antics and attempting to force a collab or cameo upon them through a vlog or something similar.

These encounters would be minor, but could ultimately serve to make the game world feel more alive and responsive. It would be a great way to not only realize the full potential of a possible in-game social media system, but also an avenue to cleverly progress the long-time Rockstar open-world trend of random, surprise encounters.
