Nightmare Echoes are variants of existing Echoes in Wuthering Waves that greatly affect how players use their Resonators. They are inherently stronger than their regular counterparts, and if you want to get the most out of your characters, getting a Nightmare Echo should be on your list of priorities.
The process of finding and absorbing a Nightmare Echo is fairly simple, but depending on how strong your teams are in WuWa, you might have a tough time beating the enemies that drop them. Here’s a brief explainer of what Nightmare Echoes are and how to get them.

What are Nightmare Echoes?
A Nightmare Echo is basically an alternate variant of the regular Echoes in WuWa dropped by Overlord-class enemies (otherwise known as the 4-cost Echoes). Nightmare versions have different active skills and provide a percentage elemental damage boost — the latter bonus alone already makes them more valuable than a standard Echo. Since they provide elemental damage boosts passively, Nightmare Echoes can be used in place of a 3-cost Echo and enable a 441111 Echo composition.
It’s worth noting that Nightmare Echoes also have the same Sonata/Set effects as their regular versions, which means you won’t need to make any significant changes to your character builds.
How to Unlock Nightmare Echoes
Before you can start farming Nightmare Echoes, you need to complete the Dream Patrol I quest in Rinascita. You can start this tutorial quest by speaking to the White Cat in Ragunna City after completing Act 2 Chapter 3 of the Rinascita story questline.
Dream Patrol I introduces players to the titular Dream Patrols, a type of overworld activity in Rinascita. Completing this quest reveals the locations of all Nightmare Echoes on your map. For reference, you can find each Nightmare Echo in the following regions:
Nightmare Echo |
Location |
---|---|
Feilian Beringal |
Requiem Ravine |
Thundering Mephis |
Mistveil Bay |
Tempest Mephis |
Shores of Last Breath |
Impermanence Heron |
Twin Peaks |

Averardo Vault – West |
Mourning Aix |
Averardo Vault – South |
Crownless |
Penitent’s End |
After defeating a Nightmare Echo, they will appear in the list of Echoes under the Echo Hunting tab of your Guidebook.
Nightmare Tempest Mephis and Nightmare Crownless are locked behind the following Exploration Quests:
- Tempest Mephis: Where Wind Returns to Celestial Realms
- Nightmare Crownless: Ruins Where Shadows Roam
To start the Nightmare Tempest Mephis quest, go to the Resonance Beacon south of Shores of Last Breath, then go to the ruins to the north. Look for a Lumiscale Construct lying on the ground and interact with it.
As for the Nightmare Crownless quest, open the Exploration Progress menu in your Map screen (click on the Compass icon on the upper-left corner next to the name of the region you’re on), then go to the Penitent’s End menu. Scroll down the list of activities to find the Ruins Where Shadows Roam quest, then select Track.
