Trailer Shows Hyper Light Breaker Characters and Bosses [EXCLUSIVE]

Hyper Light Breaker is Heart Machine’s follow-up to its hit isometric pixel art adventure, building on its already strong foundation by expanding into the third dimension. While there’s the obvious perspective shift, Hyper Light Breaker has expanded in more ways than visually. Heart Machine’s not-quite-sequel is a procedurally generated, roguelike, cooperative romp that takes advantage of Heart Machine’s talents for tight combat and intriguing world-building.

Heart Machine has unveiled some additional details about Hyper Light Breaker in an exclusive trailer provided to Game Rant. In the minute-long trailer, fans are given a look at Hyper Light Breaker‘s cast of playable characters followed by enticing footage of some of the game’s key bosses–known as Crowns in Hyper Light Breaker‘s universe. Despite the trailer’s brevity, a surprising amount of information is packed into the reel.

In a recent interview with Game Rant, Hyper Light Breaker developer Heart Machine details how the team developed gear for player builds.

An Up Close Look At Hyper Light Breaker’s Playable Characters

The trailer kicks off by showcasing Hyper Light Breaker‘s playable characters. First up is Vermillion, the character on the roster who most closely resembles The Drifter from Hyper Light Drifter. Hyper Light Breaker‘s Vermillion is an all-rounder that can reliably tackle enemies up close or from range and is likely a great first pick for newcomers.

Next up is Lapis, with the gameplay footage demonstrating her role as a heavy weapons specialist. Hyper Light Breaker‘s Lapis is shown armed with a powerful handheld cannon, throwing grenades at oncoming enemies, and unleashing a powerful melee attack that sends shockwaves at distant hostiles.

Lastly, the trailer offers a look at Hyper Light Breaker‘s Goro. Goro fits into somewhat of an assassin archetype in this footage, delivering rapid strikes with twin daggers. He’s also shown dropping a massive pixelated cube over the heads of a group of enemies, a visual display that feels like a nod to Hyper Light Drifter‘s iconic pixel art style.

Trailer Shows Off Hyper Light Breaker’s Crown Bosses

After the character showcase, Heart Machine shifts gears with some up-close looks at Hyper Light Breaker‘s Crown bosses. These bosses are primary objectives for players to tackle throughout their roguelike runs, so it’ll be important for players to swiftly familiarize with them.

The first Crown on display is Dro, Crown of Tears. Dro is a massive, imposing wolf-like being armed with a massive sword–a potentially familiar sight to those who tackled Great Grey Wolf Sif in Dark Souls. Dro uses a combination of devastating sword blows and magical abilities that send players into a bullet hell-style dash for safety. Dro appears to have a well-rounded move set that can challenge any play style.

The trailer wraps up with a look at another Crown: Exus, Crown of Flames. Visually, Exus sports an eye-catching design combining reptilian features with that of an armored guardian. Exus challenges players with deadly tornadoes that move about the arena along with a punishing ground slam and some ranged fireballs. Based on the footage in these trailers, Hyper Light Breaker players must fully utilize their skills, equipment, and dodge buttons to topple these intimidating bosses.
