With the PlayStation 5, more than any other PlayStation console, there’s a flood of remakes. Remakes of old games, remakes of titles that weren’t even ten years old, entirely faithful remakes, or remakes that change stuff up significantly. There’s so many, but most of them are fantastic, and several are console-exclusive as well.
With the power of the PS5, these games have the potential to look visually stunning, better than they’ve ever been. Even old-school-style remakes or PS4 ones play exceptionally well on this system and give a nice contrast to the big-budget Sony remakes.

The Last Of Us Part 1
The Definitive Way To Play This Modern Classic
If you just got a PS5, one of the best games to play first is The Last of Us Part 1. The game looks incredible, especially on the Pro, as it’s a PS5 Pro Enhanced title. It’s a big leap from the original PS3 version and still a noticeable jump from the PS4 remaster. Last of Us Part 1 has one of the greatest stories and some of the best characters in the video game medium, and this is the best way to experience it.
The gameplay isn’t too beefed up, besides the improved enemy AI, which is much smarter. It’s still not to the level of those impressive E3 and Pax showcases, where enemies surprise attack you, but it’s still a big improvement, nevertheless. Sadly, the multiplayer’s absent, but that’s the only big negative to this remake.

Demon’s Souls
Where It All Began
PlayStation has a few exclusive FromSoftware games under its belt, including the fan-beloved Bloodborne and the first game in the Souls series, Demon’s Souls. Originally a 2009 PS3 exclusive, it was given a remake as a launch PS5 game. The graphics here are stunning, and you can argue it looks and performs better than Elden Ring, a big stress test game for the PS5.
That’s saying something, and while the gameplay was largely untouched, this is actually a good thing here. Some may complain about the still present cheese tactics, but it should be preserved in this remake, especially as FromSoftware didn’t make it. Bluepoint Games developed the remake, and they did a stellar job akin to what the studio did with another Japanese-developed PlayStation exclusive.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania
Some Of The Greatest GameCube Games Remade For PS5
Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania is a title that edges toward a remaster. Still, it is a remake because it was built from the ground up with a new physics engine. A remake of Super Monkey Ball 1, 2, and the levels included in Monkey Ball Deluxe, Sega killed it here. Sure, hardcore fans might be peeved about the new physics, and while it’s different, it’s amazing in its own right.
Your ball has less weight, allowing you to bounce much further. This creates many new skips in levels that weren’t in the original, and it’s so fun to experiment. The game’s also a lot more accessible to beginners as the lives system was removed, plus you have a couple of sweet bonus modes to play, too.

Yakuza Kiwami
A Necessary Remake
It’s safe to say that the weakest mainline Yakuza/Like a Dragon game is the original PS2 title. The combat feels so bad and completely unnatural. That’s where Yakuza Kiwami steps in because it throws away the original combat system for the best one in the series from Yakuza 0.

Punching out thugs feels immensely better in what’s a night and day difference. Plus, there’s additional story content adding many significant scenes, so even if you played and beat the original, fans must check out Kiwami.

System Shock
Keeping It Old-School
When you look at a game like the original System Shock, many people would think it needs more hand-holding as figuring out what to do is solely on you. Nightdive Studios, however, executed this game the right way. It should come as no surprise that the developer behind many acclaimed remasters remained faithful to the original design philosophy of System Shock, keeping it a hardcore immersive sim that requires active thinking and some notetaking to complete.
The remake updates the visuals to look modern but still has a nice retro vibe, heavily improves the Cyberspace sections, and overall makes the game much more playable by today’s standards. It’s still for the hardcore crowd, but people in that group will love this game.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
The Best Final Fantasy In Over A Decade
The middle chapter of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, FF7 Rebirth, delivers a stellar RPG experience with a more robust combat system and, most importantly, nails the most crucial story beats of the original game. If you’re familiar with the classic title, you know the most memorable scenes come in the middle, and the way Rebirth executes them is about as perfect as you could get.
It gives you the feels, especially with the amazing award-winning score. The remake works a lot better, though, for people who are already fans instead of newcomers, so this would be one remake where it’s advised to play the original first.

Silent Hill 2
A Remake Hardly Anyone Expected To Be Great
Many in the survival horror community didn’t expect the Silent Hill 2 remake to be any good, but SH2 proves trailers aren’t everything. Bloober Team exceeded all expectations here. The story told was a great revision, remaining faithful but adding significant details that add to the established lore without being too obvious in its symbolism.
There were original SH2 devs who contributed to this game, and it shows, as it’s a tight, consistent narrative. The atmosphere is still top-tier in the horror genre, and the gameplay is more fun due to the improved combat and sneaky Mannequin enemies you have to watch out for. Classic Silent Hill 2 remains the best, artistically, but a lot of people will prefer this remake.

Resident Evil 2
The Best Horror Remake Ever Shines Brightest On PS5
Without question, the Resident Evil 2 remake is the game responsible for the massive influx of video game remakes since 2019. That wouldn’t happen if the game wasn’t good. RE2 remake still proves to be a survival horror masterpiece, improving virtually everything in the original, and remains the scariest out of the recent RE titles.

Mr. X was such a great pursuer enemy that you dreaded seeing. The game’s even better on PS5 and looks fantastic, but the best way to play on consoles is via a PS5 Pro. On that system, Resident Evil 2 especially looks good with its incredible usage of ray-tracing and HDR.

The Pinball Arcade
Physical Media Saves The Day

February 8, 2012
Certain live-service games or continuously updated titles just turn bad and become unrecognizable from their peak form. One of those titles is the Pinball Arcade, a collection of real-life pinball machines remade in video game form. This was a very popular pinball game in the early to mid-2010s, but in June 2018, disaster struck.
Bally Williams machines, which were by far the most popular tables in the game, were removed as the developers lost the license. That license eventually went to Zen Studios. Thankfully, Pinball Arcade seasons one and two had PS4 physical releases, preserving many digitally remade tables still unavailable in Pinball FX, like Terminator 2, Pin Bot, and the two Elvira machines.

Shadow Of The Colossus
How You Envisioned The Original In Your Head
Akin to the Demon’s Souls remake, the Shadow of the Colossus remake is built from the ground up and looks jaw-dropping. This makes all the memorable key moments hit that much harder than the original. The great visuals and performance on PS5, played through backward compatibility, are going to win a lot of people over because the original PS2 game, while very ambitious, suffered big time in both areas.
Once again, the gameplay remains unchanged, which is a bit unfortunate here, as there was cut content in the original that could’ve been brought over. Besides that, this remake remains the best way to play Shadow of the Colossus and feels like the game the original developers wanted to make.
