Super Mario Speedrunner Plays Piano While Gaming With His Feet

Super Mario Speedrunner Plays Piano While Gaming With His Feet

Summary

  • A streamer played New Super Mario Bros. Wii with his head and feet at Awesome Games Done Quick.
  • On top of that, they also used their hands to play along with the game’s soundtrack on a keyboard.
  • Just to make it more difficult again, they then demonstrated that could do all of that blindfolded.

Awesome Games Done Quick is back for 2025 to remind you that no matter how good you think you are at your favorite games, there’s always someone out there who is better at them than you. In some cases, there are people out there so good that they have to invent new ways to play them just to feel challenged, like this guy who plays New Super Mario Bros. Wii with his head and his feet so that his hands are free to play the game’s soundtrack.

The speedrunner’s name is Wes, short for FunkopotamusWes which is what he goes by on Twitch. Wes has been performing what he called Piano-fied runs (thanks, Vice) since the summer of 2023. The runs require the streamer to use other body parts to play the games since he needs his hands free to play their background music. Mario Kart appears to be his go-to, but on Wednesday, he showcased his skills using New Super Mario Bros. on the Wii during this year’s AGDQ.

Don’t Miss These Amazing Speed Runs At This Year’s AGDQ

Live bands, gimmick controllers, and a classic Metroid Prime race – it’s going to be a great AGDQ.

Wes runs through exactly how his setup works to kick things off. The Joy-Con strapped to his head moves Mario left and right when Wes tilts his head left or right, while tilting his head forward makes Mario jump leaning it back makes him duck. The Joy-Con strapped to his foot is so he can make Mario run by pressing the trigger with his toe, and he can also make Mario jump by pressing down the ball of his foot. Handy if he needs to run and jump since he would be using the head controller to move.

Super Mario Bros. Wii Hands-Free

While Playing Its OST On A Keyboard As You Go

As if all of that wasn’t impressive enough, there’s a moment during Wes’s performance at AGDQ when he adds a blindfold to the mix. So from that point, he’s controlling Mario with his head and foot, playing the soundtracks for each level on a keyboard as he goes, and he can’t see a thing while he’s doing it. It isn’t just utter chaos on-screen with all of that in place either. He’s playing the game, and playing it well.

The inventive ways people come up with to add renewed difficulty to their favorite games never ceases to amaze me. Wes speedrunning Mario while playing its theme tune and doing it blindfolded might be the most inventive and impressive example I’ve seen since streamer MissMikkaa beat two copies of Elden Ring at the same time though, one with a controller and the other with a dance mat.
