The classic MOBA, Heroes of Newerth, which was shuttered in 2022, might be making a surprising comeback. Although nothing has been confirmed yet, the developer has restarted activities on the Heroes of Newerth social media accounts after more than three years without posting, which suggests the classic League of Legends and Dota 2 competitor could be building up expectations for a potential announcement.
After the success of the Warcraft 3 mod Dota, many studios started to develop their own Dota clones. The simple yet engaging idea of two teams facing each other and progressively destroying the other team’s base quickly captured players’ attention. Among the most popular MOBA games that arose in the late 2000s and early 2010s were League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, and Heroes of Newerth. Sadly, for the latter, it couldn’t keep pace with its competitors and had to shut down its servers in 2022. However, there are some hints suggesting Heroes of Newerth might be gearing up for a comeback.

Much like in MMOs, I typically play as a scrappy, top/off-lane bruiser when I play MOBAs. Aatrox and Mordekaiser are two of my favorite champions in League of Legends, and whenever I end up playing Dota 2, I usually take Axe, Sven, or Tidehunter. If this role is already taken, then I’m open to everything else, though I prefer playing a ranged carry over mid or support.
The first hint that the Heroes of Newerth developer could be planning to bring the game back is a recent social media post. The last time the official Twitter account posted was back in December 2021, when developer Garena published a heartfelt message announcing to players that Heroes of Newerth was being shut down for good. More than three years have passed since then, and the developer has crawled out of the hole and published “Happy NEW Year” on January 1, with the word “NEW” in capitals. Adding to this, the Heroes of Newerth website has seen slight changes, and now a silhouette of the game’s logo can be seen, along with particles flying around it.
This could have been just an isolated event, but it quickly got players’ attention. Many reminisced about the good old times playing Heroes of Newerth, while others began to suspect a comeback might be on the horizon, leaving comments like, “Don’t give me hope.” To make the theory even stronger, on January 6, a new post was published—this time, a picture of a big cracking egg. With the second post, excitement ramped up a bit more, and players began theorizing about the potential meanings of this. Some believe that HoN heroes could be imported into Dota 2, while others think a mobile version could be on the way.
Heroes of Newerth‘s new activity on social media has certainly excited players, showing that interest in the game remains. It’s unclear what the developer is working on, but if the theories are accurate, it will be intriguing to see how Heroes of Newerth stacks up against some of the top MOBA titles available today.
