Severance Season 2 has received a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from its 39 critic reviews as of this writing. The critics were impressed with how the show continued the thrill and excitement everyone loved from the first season. According to Alan Sepinwall of Rolling Stone, “Severance has still got it.” He acknowledged the “hiccups here and there” but also approved of how the story unfolded in a way that was as great as the first season, so it didn’t disappoint him. “For the most part, the new season is as exciting, surprising, darkly funny, and distinct as before,” he added. New York Post’s Lauren Warner added that Severance Season 2 was a standout because it was a “rare show that feels like a singular creative vision.” Dan Einav of the Financial Times shared the same sentiment and applauded the show’s “execution,” “artistry and imagination.” “The claustrophobic confines of an office are turned into an atmospheric, idiosyncratic world in its own,” Einav said.
Total Film’s Amy West said the first season was so good that it was difficult to surpass. However, the people behind Severance just showed that their creative juices haven’t run out and West approves of it. “It’s a tall order to follow-up on one of the best first seasons ever, but Severance season 2 exceeds expectations in every way,” she added. Keith Watson from the Daily Telegraph found the series “remarkable, unique [and] mind-bending” because it leaves the viewer to “think long and hard.” Variety’s Allison Herman also gave the second season a thumbs up because it hit whatever its goal was. “Whatever the destination Severance is aiming for, the journey dramatizes the arbitrary rules and compartmentalized nature of modern work better than anything else on air,” she wrote. Collider’s Carly Lane also approved of Severance Season 2. She even predicted it would be “one of the 2025’s best shows.”
Based on the early reviews, the three-year wait for Severance Season 2 is worth it. Every critic loves it and their impression of the second season hinted that the series was nothing short of perfection. According to series showrunner Dan Erickson, the new season will feature more about the Eagan family. This move is probably one of the things that the critics love about Season 2 because the family is behind Lumon Industries and its controversial “severance” program and nothing much is known about them in the first season. This storyline is one of the things that many will watch out for when Severance Season 2 premieres.
Severance Season 2 debuts on Apple TV Plus on January 17, 2025.
