Summary
- RGG Studio has just hosted a Like a Dragon Direct that specifically focuses on Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.
- The gameplay-focused Direct showed a lot of new footage for Majima’s first solo outing.
- The Direct’s biggest surprise came from the announcement that New Game Plus won’t be paid DLC like it was for Infinite Wealth.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio just gave us our best look yet at Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii through a dedicated direct that confirmed New Game Plus won’t be locked behind a paywall like it was for Infinite Wealth.
Considering the fact that we just got the last mainline Like a Dragon game less than a year ago with Infinite Wealth, it (somewhat) surprised us all to learn that RGG Studio was already cooking up another banger. The banger in question is none other than Goro Majima’s first solo outing, the appropriately whacky pirate-themed adventure, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.

A new spin on a beloved formula that also acts as a bold evolution.
Since it was revealed at RGG’s yearly showcase back in September, we’ve learned a lot about what Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is going to be all about, from its inclusion of a jump button to how it integrates ship combat. It seems that was all just scratching the surface, though, as a new Like a Dragon Direct has gone into even more detail and even confirmed New Game Plus as a free update.
Like A Dragon Direct Gives Us Our Best Look Yet At Pirate Yakuza In Hawaii
Earlier this week, RGG Studio announced that it’d be holding a Like a Dragon Direct that specifically focused on Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii’s gameplay mechanics. We’ve seen plenty of the game’s mechanics in action already, but the deep dive gave us a better look at how the ship combat, customisation, minigames, and more all function.
The Direct also confirmed that players who sign up for the Like a Dragon newsletter will be able to make Majima wear Kiryu’s iconic outfit.
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the whole Direct was the confirmation that Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii’s New Game Plus mode will be made available as a free post-launch update instead of being paid DLC. Sega previously got itself in hot water when it locked the mode behind a Deluxe Edition paywall for Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
That mercifully won’t be the case for Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, as the Direct confirmed that it’s going to be released for free at some point after the game’s launch. We don’t know when that’s going to be just yet, but it’s a good sign that Sega is listening to fans and took the feedback from Infinite Wealth’s biggest controversy on board.
Although RGG has already given us more than enough Like a Dragon goodness with this Direct, there’s surely still plenty to uncover in the final game. We won’t have to wait that long to find out, either, as Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii launches in just over a month from now on February 21, a week earlier than its initial date.
