James Gun Says Superman Is ‘The Best of Humanity’

James Gunn teased what the audience could expect in the new Superman, saying the superhero was about “compassion of the human spirit.”

A clip shared on X, formerly Twitter, featured Hoult’s Lex walking while wearing shades with two comrades behind him. One of them is a popular villain from DC Comics — Ultraman. The other one is Angela Spica aka The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría). It is easy to identify Ultraman because he rocks his typical dark color scheme costume with a prominent “U” ensemble on the chest. The sighting thrilled many fans, with several speculating that the trio was in the Fortress of Solitude. Many also praised Hoult’s performance and were convinced he would be great for his character. “Hoult has been on fire. I think he’s gonna make a great Lex,” one commented.

Meanwhile, many were unsure if they were seeing Ultraman. One even wondered if it was Ultraman or Ulysses because Ultraman’s involvement in Superman hasn’t been confirmed. However, rumors are rife that Ultraman is part of the film. Movie insider DanielRPK even claimed that Ultraman would be the “main villain.” There were also claims that Ultraman was spotted on the Superman set. Gunn reacted to the claim that Ultraman was the “main villain” by clarifying that the big bad would be Lex, but he didn’t confirm nor deny Ultraman’s involvement in the film. “The primary protagonist of Superman is, shockingly, Superman. The main villain of Superman is, shockingly, Lex Luthor,” Gunn wrote. “I don’t know where all the stuff is coming from, that it’s something other than this.” The filmmakers and DC Studios co-chairman acknowledged that there were many “stories coming out” and he admitted that he found it challenging to deal with them. He even warned fans to take everything they read online with a grain of salt. “Don’t believe anything unless you see it HERE,” he added, referring to his official account. He also jokingly asked why fans wanted to know everything before the film’s release.

The sighting of Ultraman with Lex and The Engineer in the latest footage seemingly confirms that he is indeed part of the movie. It remains unclear who plays the character. Ultraman’s involvement in the film is a big possibility because he is among Superman’s dangerous enemies. In fact, they have similarities, but the two are on opposite ends. Ultraman is even considered an evil equivalent of Superman in Earth-3.

Although there were no indications about Ultraman’s casting, Gunn’s affinity for complex characters leaves the door open for the supervillain’s inclusion in the movie. Also, Gunn hasn’t directly denied Ultraman’s involvement in the film, so there is a chance he part of it, which seems to be the case based on the footage. Fans also claimed that they saw Supergirl in the trailer. So Milly Alcock’s Supergirl might make her DCU debut in Superman.

Superman will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
