Today, January 9, marks the 15th anniversary of one of the most beloved “spin-off” games in Kingdom Hearts’ storied history – Birth by Sleep. The tragic tale of Terra, Aqua, and Ventus is still one of the strongest in the whole series and one that many fans look back on fondly. Even with its popularity in mind, no one was expecting much for its 15th birthday.

In Kingdom Hearts: Chain Of Memories, A Mistranslation Changes Everything

Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories recently had its 20th anniversary, but a key part of its story is still hidden behind a repeated mistranslation.

Imagine the community’s reaction when the official Kingdom Hearts Twitter celebrated the occasion by sharing a special message from Kingdom Hearts creator Tetsuya Nomura. The surprisingly long statement is rather interesting as it not only explains the importance of crossroads in the series, but also has a little bit of a tease for those waiting for Kingdom Hearts 4.

Tetsuya Nomura Celebrates Birth By Sleep’s 15th Anniversary With A Teasing Message

Nomura’s message begins by noting that he’s already revealed a lot about Birth by Sleep in the past, before going on to explain the significance of crossroads in the series. Kingdom Hearts 2’s secret ending, which is where Birth by Sleep was first shown, has one of the most prominent uses of crossroads, as it’s where Ventus, Terra, and Aqua all meet before taking on Xehanort.

This is a repeated motif in the series, as Chain of Memories, Kingdom Hearts Union X, and Kingdom Hearts 3 all feature key scenes at the same or similar crossroads. Nomura says this was done to show a “point of divergence” and is inspired by the crossroad myth from American folklore and losing something to gain something else.

Explaining how much crossroads mean to Kingdom Hearts isn’t all that Nomura did, though, as he also chucked in a cheeky little reference to Kingdom Hearts 4. While pondering what the Lost Masters lost to gain something in Kingdom Hearts 3’s ending, Nomura says that it’s a “story for another time”, which is clearly a nod towards Kingdom Hearts 4.

We already know that Kingdom Hearts 4 will be the start of the “Lost Masters Arc” that focuses on the Ancient Foretellers in some way. Not much else has been revealed so far, but it seems that Nomura is hinting that their crossroad meeting played a more significant part in the story than we’re aware of right now.
