Summary
- Fortnite players are criticizing Epic Games for selling what appear to be reskins of past offerings in the game’s item shop.
- Some claim that similar skins were given away for free in the past, or were included in PS Plus Packs.
Fortnite players aren’t happy with the recent selection of skins in the game’s item shop, calling out developer Epic Games online. Specifically, players are taking issue with variants of skins that historically have been included for free or in various PS Plus Packs, leading some to accuse Epic of being “greedy.” These criticisms come as Fortnite continues to delve into the world of digital customization items, something that will likely continue throughout 2025.
Fortnite has undergone significant changes since its initial release back in 2017, but perhaps the biggest difference between “old” Fortnite and modern-day Fortnite is the abundance of skins and other customization options players now have access to. New skins and cosmetics have long been a core part of the Fortnite experience, with each new battle pass adding to the game’s ever-increasing collection of characters. With the shiny new game modes Epic Games has launched in Fortnite over the last year, it’s clear the developers see the game as more of a platform than a standalone experience. The abundance of cosmetic items is always sure to draw some criticism, with players now taking issue with Fortnite‘s current crop of skins.

Reddit user chark_uwu’s recent post prompted a discussion among Fortnite fans regarding the game’s newest shop rotation, which includes what players call “reskins” of other popular skins. “This is starting to get concerning,” said the player. “5 edit styles sold separately in just a week? Literally just last year these would be either free skins, PS+ packs, or just added to the skins they were based on. For reference, second picture is all free additions from 2018 to 2024.” Edit styles are another way for players to customize their Fortnite experience to their liking and have traditionally been offered or unlocked for free. However, players are accusing Epic of being “greedy” when it comes to these items.
Fortnite Players Accuse Epic Games of “Greedy” Skins
“All these reskins of simple random skins that are nothing more than color changes being released as new skins is ridiculous,” said another player. These complaints come as Epic Games continues to push the envelope with regard to what can be considered cosmetics. Just recently, Fortnite launched its new “Kicks” item category, which added footwear for players’ characters to wear. These, of course, come at an extra cost, and just like the skins mentioned above, they have been quite controversial.
Players are currently in the middle of Fortnite‘s Chapter 6 Season 1 update. This update brought several major changes with it, such as the addition of new weapons and points of interest, all of which are tied together with a traditional Japanese aesthetic. Things are sure to heat up as 2025 continues, with leaks indicating that a Godzilla vs. Kong update will be dropping in Fortnite soon. A Godzilla skin is already part of Fortnite‘s current season, indicating Epic Games is at least open to bringing massive Kaiju and other monsters to its free-to-play world.
