Summary
- Fans believe a main character death is necessary for realistic finale.
- Fans want to see original traits from main characters restored in season 5.
- Cast and creators are aware of intense fan opinions and pressures for final season.
Stranger Things season 5 will see everyone’s favorite characters back in Hawkins, Indiana facing Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) and figuring out what comes next… as long as they can get rid of the threat from the Upside Down, that is. There may be plenty of popular Netflix series, but it’s safe to say that the final season of Stranger Things is the most highly anticipated in the streaming service’s history.
Fan theories about time jumps and what’s going to happen to each major character are being shared all the time. Viewers can guess that some things are definitely going to occur, such as The Party winning against Vecna. But since the finale is likely going to be fascinating, scary, epic, and emotional, fans have a lot of thoughts about what should take place. In one particularly compelling Reddit thread, viewers have decided how the Stranger Things finale can truly make them happy.

Stranger Things Season 5 Will Only Feel Complete If These Things Are Included
In a Reddit thread, fans thought about their must-have storylines for Stranger Things season 5, and the conversation kept coming back to which main characters could get killed. Imagining anyone in Hawkins dying is tough, but one
Redditor thinks if Stranger Things characters have to die, it should be Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown). They wrote:
“Eleven – is the one that created this and I think it’s only right to have her die saving the world like she usually always does. Max – we all know how max has survived vecna twice and gone through hell…”
Many agree that Stranger Things season 5 won’t feel complete unless a main character passes away because it would be unrealistic otherwise. For one thing, as fans often point out, this is a sci-fi/horror TV series. the body count can’t be zero in season 5, especially since it’s the final season. For another thing, the Upside Down is so frightening that it makes sense that two characters who are connected to it would die. While losing Eleven or Max would be terrible, it seems most likely that Max could die, given the fact that she’s been in a coma for a long time. Then Eleven can still save the day by the final episode.
Redditor @Love-Desserts wants Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard) to return to the kind character he used to be. Many hope Mike and Will Byers’s (Noah Schnapp) friendship will be featured in the new season, and it would be nice to see Mike being more compassionate toward Will. Every fan wants to see their favorite character be happy and successful, and Mike has become a bit harsher in recent seasons. The fan wrote:
“I want to see Mike stand up and be like the Mike we got from season 1-2. I feel like the first 2 seasons really showed how much he loves and cares for his friends and also his leadership skills.”
Most of all, Stranger Things season 5 fans want to see The Party in a good place at the end of the series. Redditor @hadapurpura wrote:
“It needs to give us a happy ending (because this is the kind of ending this show needs), while making it interesting, not too formulaic, and especially earned.”
Even if there are a few deaths, most fans want to see the main characters in a great place at the end of the story. Before any Stranger Things spinoffs can be put into motion, the main characters need to be sent on their way. For most of them, this could mean going to college or taking the opportunity to travel and see parts of the world that they haven’t been able to.
What Has The Cast And Crew Recently Said About Stranger Things Season 5?
Although of course the cast of Stranger Things can’t say much about the final season, they have shared a little bit in some interviews. In March 2024, Finn Wolfhard spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and talked about filming the last season. He said:
“So, yeah, not being around everyone all the time was definitely a bummer about filming 4, but 5 is the opposite. We’re all together all the time.”
If fans are sharing what they want for the final season, they’ve also been vocal about what they don’t want to see at the end of the show. The showrunners/creators are more than aware of the passionate opinions that they have. In December 2023, The Duffer Brothers talked about the challenges and pressures of crafting Stranger Things season 5 in an interview with The Guardian. Matt Duffer said:
“I think one very particular way to fail is to attempt to appease everybody. We have a huge variety of fans that span a huge age range and I’m sure they have all their own ideas of how they want the show to end. But we’re not consulting social media on this.”
