His story, One Piece, is by far the most-sold manga of all time, and it is safe to say that right now, it is also the most popular one. One Piece’s popularity is simply down to its compelling story, which Oda has crafted with incredible care. Oda has written a story that resonates deep within the hearts of people, and the way that he integrates themes of freedom into his plots makes them worthwhile. One Piece follows the journey of Luffy, a boy who intends to become the Pirate King in the era of pirates, and he sets out to the sea in search of the grand treasure left behind by the former Pirate King, Gol D Roger. To accomplish his goal, Luffy intends to gather a crew and then fulfill his dream, becoming greater than anyone else.
Over the years, Luffy has accomplished quite a lot. While he started his journey as a no-name pirate, he continued gaining more infamy over the years, and more recently, in the Wano Country Arc, he beat Kaido, and ended up becoming an Emperor himself. Luffy’s journey has been absolutely phenomenal for the fans to watch, and Oda has incorporated a piece of his imagination in just about every arc of the Series. Right now, One Piece is in the Elbaf Arc, the conclusion of which will most definitely put Luffy closer to the One Piece than ever before. The series is very close to its end now, and Oda will most likely only continue to keep on drawing it for about 5 years, possibly about 6 to 7 at most.
Regardless, fans have enjoyed this journey thoroughly, and naturally, the question of what Oda’s next work is going to be comes up as well. He has previously stated that he has plans for a new manga, but, these plans have, since then, changed drastically.
Oda’s Love For Robots And His Plans For A Robot Manga
Oda Wanted To Draw A Robot Manga After One Piece At One Point
If there’s one thing that Oda would absolutely love to draw after One Piece, it is a manga based on robots. Oda absolutely adores robots, and at one point, he was obsessed with the idea of drawing a robot manga. Initially, he intended to wrap up One Piece within 5 years, and then, he intended to wrap up the story within 10. Of course, none of that worked out, and even though Oda had previously stated that he wanted to end the story as soon as possible, he kept on adding more content and characters to the series, making it as massive as it is today. This is great for One Piece fans, but at the same time, it is also sad to realize that initially, Oda had hoped to write a new manga following the conclusion of One Piece.

As is evident from Oda’s words, he intended to write a robot manga at some point. However, this dream never came to fruition and it is highly unlikely that this will ever happen.
What Happened To Oda’s Robot Manga Plans?
One Piece Encapsulates All Of Oda’s Dreams
Unfortunately, Oda’s plans to write a robot manga never came true. A few years ago, Oda addressed the fact that he wanted to draw a robot manga at one point. His obsession with robots was such that he always wanted to write a series centered around them once he concluded writing One Piece. However, One Piece has gone on for an incredibly long time. Oda has been writing One Piece for the vast majority of his life, and that truly is a shocking fact for the fans to hear. The series is now edging closer to its 30th anniversary, and it is highly likely that it will go way beyond its 30th anniversary as well.
As such, Oda most definitely won’t have time for another manga. He’s getting old, and, most of all, needs rest following his exhausting work in Jump.
When Oda addressed his previous dreams of writing a robot manga, he clearly stated he gave up on the idea, and instead, resorted to drawing Mecha into One Piece. Clearly, there is absolutely no dearth of Mecha in One Piece. A member of the straw Hat Pirates, Franky himself is a mecha. There are many other characters who make use of exciting technology and clearly, Oda decided to let his creativity loose here and incorporate as much into One Piece of his next story as possible. According to him, One Piece has everything that he has ever wanted to draw packed into one, which means that he doesn’t need to draw a new manga anymore.
Of course, one cannot say for sure what Oda plans to do after One Piece ends. He has previously stated the possibility of drawing one-shots or spin-off series after the conclusion of One Piece, and these possibilities are still very real. Perhaps, Oda might even give his robot one shot a try as well, and that would certainly be exciting for the fans. Fans don’t truly know which way things are going to go in the future, but what they do know is that Oda, at this point, does not intend to continue with another manga at all costs.
