Nintendo has released a new Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition trailer, shedding more light on the game’s plot. Titled “The Year is 2054,” the video features Elma, one of the main protagonists, narrating the events that brought players to the world of Mira. The trailer also showcases snippets of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition gameplay and how it’s been adapted now that it no longer has the support of the Wii U’s GamePad.

Xenoblade Chronicles is a JRPG series created by Monolith Soft’s Tetsuya Takahashi, exclusive to Nintendo consoles. The first Xenoblade was almost a Japan-only release, but thanks to the fan campaign Operation Rainfall, Western audiences eventually got a chance to experience it. The game’s success led to three more entries in the series: two mainline titles, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and a spinoff, Xenoblade Chronicles X. With the release of XCX: Definitive Edition, all games in the series will now be playable on the Nintendo Switch.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is finally being freed from its Wii U prison, but a lot of games are still trapped on Nintendo’s legacy console.

Today, Nintendo shared a new trailer highlighting the plot of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. In 2054, Earth was caught in an intergalactic war between two alien races. Before the planet was destroyed, a select group of humans boarded the White Whale ark, escaping in search of a new home. Their journey, fraught with challenges, eventually led them to the planet Mira. However, a crucial piece of technology called the Lifehold, which houses most passengers in stasis, was lost during the crash landing. It’s up to the player to locate the Lifehold before its battery runs out.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition Will Add New Story Elements

The original game ended on a cliffhanger, but the definitive edition promises new story segments, potentially continuing the unresolved ending. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is one of the most ambitious and expansive RPGs on Nintendo consoles. Beyond the primary mission of the BLADE, the user-controlled character tasked with finding the Lifehold, players must also explore Mira, plant probes, and battle both native and alien creatures to secure humanity’s new home.

On the Wii U, Xenoblade Chronicles X used the console’s GamePad extensively, functioning as both a map that continuously tracked the character’s surroundings and a tool for interactions in single-player and online multiplayer modes. The new trailer offered glimpses of how these interactions have been streamlined for the Switch. The GamePad interface has been transferred to a dedicated menu. There’s now a mini-map in the upper-right corner, similar to other Xenoblade titles, and other UI elements previously found on the GamePad have now been relocated to the main screen. Overall, the UI doesn’t appear cluttered, though this adaptation may slightly alter the dynamics of the definitive version compared to the original.
