Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us series of video games has been recognized among the greatest stories told in gaming, by players and critics alike. The manner in which the series depicts human emotions against a visceral post-apocalyptic backdrop is nothing short of spectacular.
Needless to say, the series only grew in popularity when HBO adapted the story in the form of a TV series. With Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us releasing soon, viewers are in for a treat. Judging by the direction that Season 1 took, the series is largely sticking to the plot from the video games, with a few minor changes here and there. This means Season 2 is likely to follow the story from The Last of Us Part 2.

Isaac
Commander of the WLF, Abby’s Leader
- Played By: Jeffrey Wright (video games and HBO series)
Season 2 of The Last of Us is likely to introduce viewers to the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), a faction of militia that Abby, the deuteragonist in The Last of Us Part 2, is a part of.
Isaac is the ruthless commander of the WLF and plays the role of Abby’s leader. He refers to Abby as his best scar killer, and plays an important role during the later stages of the story. It’s likely the TV series will expand his role.
9
Yara
A Member of the Seraphites, Important to Abby
- Played by: Victoria Grace (video games)
The Seraphites are a group of religious extremists in the world of The Last of Us that reside in the ruins of Chicago. This group is at war against the WLF and Abby must fight them.
Yara is a part of this group, and her story is closely connected to that of Abby and Lev. She’s likely to play a short, yet important role in Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us.
8
Jesse
Jacksonville Resident, A Friend to Ellie
- Played By: Stephen A. Chang (video games), Young Mazino (HBO series)
Jesse is another important character from The Last of Us Part 2. As of the end of Season 1 of the TV series, Ellie and Joel are implied to be headed towards Jacksonville, the town run by Tommy, Joel’s younger brother.

These deaths in HBO’s The Last Of Us could well have been avoided.
Jesse gets introduced in the second game and will likely play an important role in Season 2 as one of Ellie’s friends. While his character isn’t that important in the game, he could potentially get developed further in the TV series.
7
Owen
Member of the WLF, Abby’s Situationship
- Played by: Patrick Fugit (video games), Spencer Lord (HBO series)
While Abby’s entire group will feature in The Last of Us Season 2, Owen is among the characters that will be the most prominent member of the WLF outside of Abbie herself. Owen is an important character in Abbie’s story, and plays the role of her ex-boyfriend turned best friend. He’s a central figure in her moral challenges.
6
Lev
A Member of the Seraphites, Important to Abby
- Played By: Ian Alexander (video games)
Another major member of the Seraphites, Lev is also a major supporting character in Abbie’s story. In fact, he plays a similar role in Abbie’s story as Dina does in Ellie’s story, in that he accompanies her through most of her journey through Chicago. Lev has a tragic past that will leave viewers shaken when the TV show explores it in depth.
5
Dina
Jacksonville Resident, Ellie’s Love Interest
- Played By: Shannon Woodward (video games), Isabela Merced (HBO series)
Among the most interesting developments in Ellie’s story in The Last of Us Part 2 is that players get to experience her growth through her traumatic childhood and teenage to young adulthood. She discovers what it means to live and experience a social life as part of the community she has access to in Jacksonville. Dina is a major part of this growth, and one of her closest friends turned love interest. The HBO series is likely to explore this relationship further.

4
Joel
A Smaller Role, But Still Important
- Played By: Troy Baker (video games), Pedro Pascal (HBO series)
Joel Miller is arguably everyone’s favorite character from Season 1 of The Last of Us. Pedro Pascal put in a masterclass of a performance to play the troubled smuggler in the harrowing post-apocalypse. In Season 2, it is very likely that Joel’s role will reduce in comparison to Ellie’s. Regardless of this, Joel’s role is potentially going to be even more important than in Season 1.
3
Tommy
Joel’s Brother Might Get a Bigger Spotlight
- Played By: Jeffrey Pierce (video games), Gabriel Luna (HBO series)
Tommy didn’t get a lot of screen presence in Season 1, but this is likely to change a lot in Season 2. Even more so in the TV series than in the games, in fact. While The Last of Us Part 2 develops Tommy’s character and his relationship with Joel and Ellie, he’s still a supporting character. Considering Joel’s popularity among the show’s fanbase, the format changing with the TV series, and Tommy being Joel’s younger brother, he might get a lot more screen time and story development in Season 2.
2
Abby
A Nemesis and Parallel to Joel and Ellie
- Played by: Laura Bailey (video games), Kaitlyn Dever (HBO series)
Abby is going to be the biggest character to be introduced in The Last of Us Season 2. She was a divisive character among the fanbase in the second game, but also a groundbreaking one in terms of video game storytelling.

1
Ellie
She’s All Grown Up, and a Capable Warrior
- Played by: Ashley Johnson (video games), Bella Ramsey (HBO series)
Ellie will remain the most important character in The Last of Us series. She’s the most unique character in the story, one of one, as the only person immune to Cordyceps in the world. This immunity is likely to be explored further in Season 2. Furthermore, her relationship with Joel becomes a lot more complex, in addition to social influences from the likes of Abbie, Dina, Tommy, Jesse, and other Jacksonville residents.
