AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT benchmark leaks show it beating the Nvidia RTX 4080 Super

AMD might have largely ignored its RDNA 4 graphics card launch on the big stage of CES 2025, but leakers aren’t. Fresh AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT benchmarks and specs have appeared hinting the new card really will be a strong contender when it launches.

The leaks include two 3DMark tests, indications of the card’s total board power, and discussions of just how generally impressive its performance is. The card is still set to be a mid-range part in the grand scheme of 2025’s best graphics cards, with the RTX 5090 sitting well clear of the rest, but AMD’s latest looks set to bring Nvidia 4080 Super levels of performance in some situations, according to these leaks.

The original source of these new AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT performance leaks, is the Chiphell forum, where admin user nApoleon posted screenshots of 3DMark benchmark runs and GPU-Z information, along with a post that suggests users should hold off from rushing to buy Nvidia’s RTX 5000 series. They claim the graphics card “world” has “completely changed,” based on the results they’ve posted.

chiphell admin quote saying Latest update: Don’t rush to pre-order the 5000 series, and if you want to change graphics cards above 4060, sell them immediately. The world has changed... It has completely changed...

Not long after posting, though, the images were removed, just leaving the original text, making it seem rather cryptic in isolation. Instead, other Chiphell forum members and leakers elsewhere have done their part to complete the picture.

Chiphell forum member, Zhanghonghao, adds that the new card appears to have had a significant increase in its total board power (TBP) compared to earlier samples of the card. Initially, they say, the board was expected to hit a modest 265W TBP, but new leaks point to it hitting 330W. That’s still far below the 575W expected to be needed by the RTX 5090, but it hints at AMD’s latest certainly packing plenty of power, despite its hopefully modest price and mid-range positioning.

chiphell quote saying In addition, the TBP of the public version seems to have been increased, and it was only 265W at the beginning.

Meanwhile, X (formerly Twitter) users, @Wukongmyth2460 and @0x22h reposted the original images, allowing us to see the raw data that has lead to all this speculation.

From one of these images, we can see a 3DMark Time Spy Extreme score of 14,591 overall, posted alongside GPU-Z measurements for GPU clock speed, memory clock speed and more. While the overall score for such a test run will differ depending on factors such as the CPU being used, the vast majority of the test is GPU-dependent, giving us what should be a reasonably representative view of the performance of this chip.

As such, we can see that RX 9070 XT does in fact beat the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super by a few hundred points compared to the 14,451 score Nvidia’s card achieved in our Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super review.

Another image, though, shows the more demanding 3DMark Speedway benchmark, and in this test the AMD card isn’t quite so impressive. We don’t use the Speedway test in our benchmarks, but comparing to other sources that have tested the RTX 4080 Super with this benchmark, we can see that it typically scores around 7,500 points, which is well ahead of the 6,345 points that the 9070 XT leak shows. In fact, this Speedway test shows that the 9070 XT can’t even topple the Nvidia 4070 Ti Super.

However, as one leaker also points out, it is still early days, and drivers have yet to be fully finalized. We’ve already seen a benchmark for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 deliver 99FPS at 4K, extreme settings on the regular RX 9070, so it stands to reason that the XT version should add that additional boost of power.

As for that GPU-Z data that was shown alongside the benchmarks, it detects an RX 7800 XT, but shows specs that differ wildly from that card, leaving plenty of scope for it to in fact be the new unreleased card. If true, this would suggest the card can boost its clock speed to at least 3,060MHz, while the base clock will sit at 2,520MHz. Ultimately, as with all the rest of these leaks, though, none of it is confirmed by AMD so could be far from accurate.

While AMD’s next-generation flagship card is leaking, CES 2025 continues on with plenty of new gear still to be discovered. Announcements such as Nvidia revealing the RTX 5000 series might be grabbing most of the early headlines but examples such as this amazing Asus CPU cooler with a wraparound screen are the gems still to be unearthed.
