Why Marvel Rivals' Leaked Game Mode May Need to Pull Some Serious Strings

As the latest entry in the hero shooter genre, Marvel Rivals has exploded in popularity, and its frequent updates and additions are primed to keep it at the top of mind for players. One of these new additions may have been uncovered by a leaker, but if Marvel Rivals does add a new game mode, heavy changes could be in store for certain characters.

Whether it’s because of the popularity of hero shooters or the success of the Marvel comics and movies, Marvel Rivals shot off like a rocket at launch, and doesn’t seem to be trending downward any time soon. In its first month, the game has seen great success with a still growing player base. With more content still on the way, leakers have been hinting at new additions to the game that have some players excited. One such leak claims that a Capture the Flag game mode is coming to Marvel Rivals sometime in the future. While still unconfirmed, this has had players considering what changes would be needed in order for the competition to stay both fair and fun.

Marvel Rivals has confirmed that four new heroes are coming with its Season 1 update, putting the ball firmly back in Overwatch 2’s court.

When Could Capture the Flag be Added to Marvel Rivals

Currently, Marvel Rivals includes four main game modes: Convoy, Convergence, Domination, and Conquest. While these modes, and the limited-time Jeff’s Winter Splash mode, have been enough to keep fans busy, the upcoming season 1 will bring additional content to Marvel Rivals, including 1 confirmed new game mode. Doom Matches have been confirmed as an additional game mode that will be introduced along with new heroes and maps at the launch of the next season. Additionally, leaks from the game’s internal files suggest that Capture the Flag might be coming as well. It’s possible that Doom Matches could be Marvel Rivals‘ version of a Capture the Flag mode, as little is currently known about either new competition.

Season 0 of Marvel Rivals was always intended as an introductory period for the game, and was advertised as being shorter than full seasons moving forward. Marvel Rivals Season 1 will begin on January 10, and will go by the name “Eternal Night Falls.” With the launch of Season 1, new characters Mr. Fantastic and The Invisible Woman of The Fantastic Four will also be added, and the other two members of the team will arrive later in the season. This is also when Doom Matches should be added as a playable game mode. Because it’s unknown what this mode will be like, it’s difficult to say if it has any relation to the anticipated Capture the Flag mode, but players interested in new gameplay experiences should keep an eye out for the new additions.

There is no official evidence that Doom Matches are a version of Capture the Flag, or even that a Capture the Flag mode is on the way. As with all leaks, these ideas are simply speculation.

How Could Capture the Flag Change Marvel Rivals

With a new game mode might come some adjustments to certain aspects of Marvel Rivals. In particular, some characters may have their movement or attacks adjusted in order to balance the new gameplay. Any major changes would likely only be present during Capture the Flag matches, similar to how Jeff the Shark’s attacks were altered slightly during Winter Splash matches. The major issue that might be addressed in Capture the Flag matches is character movement. Some characters have special traversal abilities, such as Spider-Man’s wall crawling or Iron Man’s powerful flight abilities. This type of gimmick could lead to these characters being wildly unbalanced in a Capture the Flag type game mode. One possible solution could be found by emulating Overwatch 2’s Capture the Flag matches, where certain movement-based abilities cause players to drop the flag on use.

As Marvel Rivals continues to grow, it’s likely that new game modes will be added on occasion, even if only for special events. Because of the popularity of Capture the Flag modes in other games, this would likely be a permanent addition if it gets added, but hopefully any character changes will be restricted to that mode only. Players have already become attached to some of their favorite character’s playstyles, so a permanent alteration might not be in the developer’s best interest. Either way, though, the future looks bright for Marvel Rivals as it begins its first official season.
