Here, we are going to take a look at who the Hooded One is. This includes how you first encounter him, as well as his place in the overall story. As expected, there will be some spoilers here for the latter acts in Path of Exile 2, so proceed with caution!

When Do You First Meet The Hooded One?

The Hooded One is met fairly early into Act One of Path of Exile 2. This can be done in by completing the quests Sorrow Among Stones and The Mysterious Shade. These take you to the Cemetery of the Eternals, where you’ll need to defeat both Asina and Draven.

Once this has been done, the quest will take you back to the Clearfell Encampment, where Una will watch the revival of the Hooded One with you. From here, this NPC becomes present in the town for each act.

After unlocking the Hooded One, he will be able to identify items for you (for free) or respec skill points at the cost of gold. While it’s possible to identify items by yourself with Scrolls of Wisdom, the Hooded One comes in handy if you have a lot of unidentified gear and don’t have enough scrolls on hand.

Who Is The Hooded One?

Through the course of the story, it’s revealed that the Hooded One is Sin. If you haven’t played the first Path of Exile game, then this may mean nothing to you. For returning players, you’ll recognize Sin. This is a god of Wraeclast that first appears in Act Five of the story.

Within the first game, we can learn a lot about this god. Sin, with the “clearest blue” eyes, was born alongside Innocence, with “burning red” eyes. The two lived up to their names, and eventually, Innocence caught Sin in the act of stealing.

Ultimately, their mother learned of this and decided to burn him at the stake (a totally normal reaction to your child stealing). This wasn’t the end of Sin though, as the ash of his body entered the people in town, causing them to essentially corrupt.

All of the above lore could be learned in The Chamber of Innocence, but how accurate is it? As we know, history is written by the winner, so the truth may be different from what’s written. Within a place called the Chamber of Innocence, it makes sense that the lore that you are reading is skewed to paint Innocence in a better light.

In truth, Innocence wanted to become a god and would do anything to reach the goal. Becoming a god is no easy task though, and Innocence was unable to garner enough followers through, well… innocent faith.

Early into the godhood journey, Innocence was most likely a humble man, but eventually, he began to manipulate those around him, lied to the masses, and painted his brother as an evil figure called the Original Evil. Interestingly, Innocence was still able to become a god.

During Act Five, you’ll also be able to face High Templar Avarius, who has a second phase in the battle transforming him into Innocence. This High Templar is the vessel for the god himself, but is killed by you in the story. Don’t worry though; this isn’t the end of Innocence. Upon the defeat of Avarius, Innocence resides in Bannon.

With that, we know who the Hooded One is now! Overall, it’s important to remember that this NPC is a Wraeclast god that was central to several quests in the first Path of Exile game. Like the Hooded One, Sin could also be found in every town in part two of the game.
