What to Expect From the Pokemon Franchise in 2025

Summary

  • Pokemon Legends: Z-A is likely to release between April and July, with possible post-launch support later in the year.
  • Leaks hint at a new mainline Nintendo Switch 2 title in 2025, possibly Black and White remakes or Johto games.
  • 2025 World Championships to highlight Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, with support for ongoing games.

Pokemon is one of the biggest franchises in the industry, and despite the fact that 2025 is seemingly breaking the traditional development cycle for new generations, with Gen 10 presumably coming out in 2026, there is still a lot of hype surrounding confirmed and potential releases for this year. Like every year, one of the biggest times for Pokemon fans comes on Pokemon Day, which occurs on February 27. Between video games on Nintendo consoles, mobile titles, and the trading card game, the franchise is looking at a rich 2025 that may be even bigger than anticipated if some leaks are true.

There will be quite a lot going for Pokemon TCG’s physical releases, with the first big set of the year being a couple of weeks away and more to come.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A – New Trailer, Release Date, and Post-Launch Support

The biggest release of the year for the franchise is likely to be the Kalos-set Pokemon Legends: Z-A, at least based on confirmed information. There is no official release date for the game, but based on leaks and past patterns it seems plausible that a gameplay trailer will be released in Q1 of 2025 (most likely between January and February), and the game itself seems likely to come out between March and June. It’s also plausible that there will be some form of post-launch support for the title, between patches, small updates, and possible DLCs.

New Unannounced Game Rumors Predictions – Black and White Remakes, Pokemon Let’s Go Johto

With Pokemon Gen 10 presumably out in 2026, it would only make sense to have a new title or set of games coming out this year after the 2024 hiatus for the mainline series, and recent rumors seem to corroborate this idea. Recently, renowned leaker Riddler Khu took to Twitter to state that a new mainline project for Nintendo Switch 2 releasing in 2025 was not covered by the TeraLeak, attaching the image of a black and white dolphin (possibly Commerson’s Dolphin). Given the colors of the dolphin and the fact that Pokemon Black and White were originally codenamed Syachi (Japanese for “killer whale”), it seems plausible that this refers to remakes or new games for Gen 5.

Likewise, there is a chance that Johto might be next since it has been over a decade since mainline games visited the region. Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee both came out for the Nintendo Switch, so a Pokemon Let’s Go Johto title would make sense. It’s also possible that no new game other than Pokemon Legends: Z-A will be announced and released this year, though, and it’s best to take leaks with a pinch of salt. If announced, it would make sense to see it on Pokemon Day 2025.

Pokemon’s 2025 World Championships

With Pokemon Legends: Z-A presumably not being a PvP game, it’s all but confirmed that the 2025 World Championships for Pokemon VGC will be held within Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, though it remains to be seen under which regulation. The World Championships will also take place for games like Pokemon GO and Pokemon TCG, and there is a chance that Pokemon TCG Pocket may join the fray.

The Pokemon World Championships of 2025 will take place in Anaheim, California, in August. The World Championships are also often used to reveal more about future plans for the franchise, so news may drop there.

Support for Ongoing Pokemon Games in 2025

There are multiple Pokemon games that are actively supported at the moment, and it seems likely that all of them will receive some kind of update – big or small – throughout 2025. The list includes:

  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
  • Pokemon GO
  • Pokemon TCG
  • Pokemon TCG Pocket
  • Pokemon Sleep
  • Pokemon Unite
  • Pokemon Masters Ex

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet‘s shiny Rayquaza event recently concluded, so it’s likely that more special events, Mass Outbreaks, and Tera Raid bosses will appear throughout the year. Similarly, Pokemon TCG is soon launching the Prismatic Evolutions set, which is primed to be one of the most successful of the past few years, if not ever, given its focus on Eevee and Eeveelutions. Each of these games has become a staple of the franchise, and all of them will likely get at least one big update in 2025.
