Squid Game Season 3 will be the final run for the hit South Korean survival drama series. However, the final season is designed to tie up loose ends in the series.

Hwang Dong-hyuk, who created and directed the series, became a household name following the success of Squid Game. However, it wasn’t easy for the filmmaker, who faced multiple rejections for over a decade before his show found a home on Netflix. Dozens of critics and over a thousand audience members who watched Squid Game Season 2 shared their reviews of the show on Rotten Tomatoes.

Lee Jung-jae, who portrays the protagonist Gi-hun in Squid Game, spoke about the series after Netflix dropped Squid Game Season 2. The second season was another massive success for the team. However, many felt that it ended abruptly and several were disappointed because Season 2 only had seven episodes and they were expecting more. The shorter season left fans with many questions, but Jung-jae said Season 3 had the answer. “I’m not here to justify the viewers’ reactions or explain our intentions. Season 3 will provide clarity to many of the questions fans have,” Jung-jae explained, per TheKoreaTimes. He also teased about his character Gi-hun’s resilience in the final season. “I’m eager for the audience to see how he evolves from this low point. He enters a deadly game with the hope of saving lives. Despite his efforts to lead, he faces numerous setbacks and ultimately hits rock bottom. It will be exciting to see how he will overcome these challenges,” the first Asian actor to win the Emmy Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series said. Jung-jae bagged the award in 2022 for his role in Squid Game Season 1.

Dong-hyuk had also spoken about Squid Game Season 3 in another interview. The director confirmed he would wrap up Gi-hun’s story in the series. “Personally, I see the third season as being the finale to this story. That’s because I believe I’ve had closure to the story I wanted to tell about society through the character of Seong Gi-hun,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. The director clarified that there would be no more Gi-hun after Squid Game Season 3, but he wasn’t closing his door to potential spinoffs. “If I ever wanted to go back to the world of Squid Game, it would be about different characters with a different story arc. Some kind of spinoff, maybe. For example, the masked guards. How did they end up here? What do they do in their downtime? Something like that, maybe,” the series creator added.

It’s safe to say that if the fans’ questions are related to Gi-hun, they will probably find answers in the final season. However, if they want to know the backstory of the masked guards, it will be something that can be explored in a potential spinoff and might not be featured in Squid Game Season 3. Dong-hyuk’s explanation made sense and many will probably agree that the first two seasons of Squid Game revolved around Gi-hun and with Season 3 announced as the final season, then they could wrap up Gi-hun’s storyline and maybe focus on other things by producing spinoffs because there are still a lot of things to explore in Squid Game. Also, it’s too late to highlight the masked guards’ backstory or the Front Man’s history in the next season because it’s already the final season, and the audience must first deal with the devastating aftermath of Gi-hun’s rebellion which ended in a bold cliffhanger.

Squid Game Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix and Season 3 will be released this year.
