Reactivate Cancelled Two Years After Initial Reveal

Reactivate Cancelled Two Years After Initial Reveal

Summary

  • Back in 2022, Splash Damage revealed Transformers: Reactivate, an online action game for one-to-four players.
  • Details on the project have been incredibly slim since then, and the game has now been cancelled altogether.
  • Splash Damage notes that several roles at the studio are now at risk of redundancy.

Just over two years after its initial reveal, Transformers: Reactivate has been cancelled by Splash Damage so the studio, which has is at risk of layoffs, can focus on other projects.

Despite being one of the most popular and prolific media properties out there, Transformers has had a weirdly rough time when it comes to gaming adaptations over the past few years. That is to say, there have barely been any Transformers games in the past console generation, despite the PS2 and Xbox 360 eras having tons of great picks to choose from.

That surprising dry spell looked like it was about to change, though, as Splash Damage, the studio best-known for Brink and Gears: Tactics, announced Transformers: Reactivate back in 2022. We didn’t learn much about the one-to-four-player online action game in the time since its unveiling, and it looks like we never will as the project has now been cancelled.

Transformers: Reactivate Has Been Cancelled

Earlier today, Splash Damage posted an update to its Twitter page, which confirmed that development on Transformers Reactivate has been halted so that the team can focus on other projects. The statement also confirms that a “number of roles” across the studio are now at risk of redundancy.

Splash Damage’s statement also praises Hasbro for being an “incredible and supportive partner” through Reactivate’s development, and thanks fans for their excitement for the project. Right now, the studio is aiming to help out those who are at risk of being laid off and notes that it wants to build a “stronger” Splash Damage for the future.

Today, we have some very difficult news to share. The decision has been made to end development of Transformers: Reactivate. This means we will be scaling down to refocus our efforts on other projects. Unfortunately, despite every effort, a number of roles across the studio are now potentially at risk of redundancy. – Splash Damage

Although it’s a massive shame to hear about more potential layoffs and lose one of the only Transformers games to emerge over the past few years, Reactivate’s development has seemingly been rather troubled. Nothing much has been said about it since it was revealed at The Game Awards in 2022, which led many fans to suspect its cancellation months before this announcement.
