Mercy and Genji Haven’t Reached the Same Level of Dialogue in Overwatch 2 as They Did in the First Game

It’s no secret that Blizzard is placing its PvE missions on the back burner, but that doesn’t mean Team 4 can’t explore other methods to continue its narrative. The recent release of the Overwatch comic “Together” is a great start. However, considering that Mercy and Genji have a fresh interaction in Season 14, which confirms that they are still friends despite their past, players have been eager to see more dialogue between them. Sadly, after the transition from Overwatch to Overwatch 2 in 2022, many of the original exchanges between the Swiss medic and younger Shimada have been erased.

In particular, some of the iconic dialogue from Overwatch‘s third Archives event, Storm Rising, which included the two characters flirting, is no longer particularly relevant in the sequel. Other affectionate voice lines, which die-hard fans often record and publish on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) or Reddit, are also missing. For some Mercy and Genji shippers, the erasure of some of these exchanges has been disappointing.

Overwatch 2‘s Invasion missions gave fans another snippet of dialogue, with Mercy asking why Genji stopped writing to her and Genji replying that “[Mercy] sent [him] a beautiful sketch, and [he] couldn’t think of a way to respond.” She comments, “Ah, I see. So you’re a terrible artist. A bad friend.” Genji then responds that he’s also a liar because “the sketch was awful.” With this being the only dialogue between the pair in the PvE mode, some took to Reddit to express their displeasure, labeling the voice lines disrespectful and out of character.

Despite the debate over whether Pharah and Mercy are an item, potentially at the expense of years of Genji and Mercy buildup, it’s at least fitting that Overwatch 2 is giving Genji and Mercy fans some closure, with the two showing that they are continuing to care for one another, even if it’s potentially just as friends. Season 15 should add more interactions to highlight how their relationship has changed. Season 14 added a few new lines, with one revealing that Mercy likes her coffee black, but addressing more of their history could go a long way for the story aficionados.

As two of Overwatch 2‘s most popular characters, further content around Mercy and Genji is a surefire way to please the community. However, it’s crucial that this content is carefully crafted and offers real depth. This being said, there are limitations to what Team 4 can achieve within a short window in-game, so hopefully it has planned ahead and expected the community to be excited about the pair’s latest interaction.
