Renowned Japanese video game designer Hideo Kojima has revealed what movies and shows had him glued to his seat throughout 2024. The Metal Gear creator is regarded as one of the first video game auteurs and praised for creating the stealth genre. Many fans across the world love Kojima’s ability to produce smart and innovative games that not only challenge players but also provide them with incredible visual stories through the medium of art. With games like Death Stranding and Snatcher under his belt, Kojima has risen to amazing heights where he’s become not only a game designer but also a producer, director, and writer over his 36-year career.

Founding Kojima Productions in 2005, Kojima eventually left the company in 2015 but later came back under the same name as an independent studio to produce Death Stranding with Norman Reedus in 2019. Kojima’s heart never strayed too far from his love of films, which started in childhood when he got his hands on a Super 8 camera. As seen on his social media accounts, the designer continuously shares what films and TV shows he has been watching and, now, he has rounded up his favorite of 2024.

Hideo Kojima Physint comment progress update

In a post on Threads, Hideo Kojima revealed that Past Lives, The Teachers’ Lounge, Dune: Part Two, All of Us Strangers, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, La Chimera, Hit Man, Gondola, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, The Substance, The Holdovers, and Juror #2 had made its way into his favorite movie list of 2024. Merging into what the game designer’s best Japanese movies were, A Girl Named Ann, All the Long Nights, and My Sunshine made the cut.

2024 had some amazing TV shows on offer, like The Day of the Jackal, Presumed Innocent, and Disclaimer, so this wouldn’t be an easy choice to make for anyone. However, Kojima pinpointed Shōgun and True Detective: Night Country, for which Jodie Foster won a Golden Globe recently, as his top picks. Of course, anime couldn’t be left on the shelf and for this, he chose Look Back, Flow, and Robot Dreams. Never afraid to give his opinion on other movies he has watched, Kojima recently shared his thoughts on Joker: Folie à Deux, which didn’t go down well at all with most fans but, surprisingly, he didn’t think it was a terrible film and seemed to enjoy Joaquin and Gaga’s performances.

In between watching movies and TV shows, Kojima has been hard at work on Death Stranding 2. The highly-anticipated sequel to 2019’s Death Stranding was confirmed by the game’s star, Norman Reedus, back in 2022, but its release date isn’t quite ready yet. Thankfully, though, fans shouldn’t have long to wait as the game designer previously stated that a reveal will take place in 2025.
