Summary

  • Fans left confused about changes in the timeline of The Last of Us Season 2 trailer.
  • New trailer showcases Abby’s story being shifted forward, hinting at major changes.
  • Showrunners possibly aiming to create early empathy for Abby to avoid backlash.

Recently, Sony and Naughty Dog revealed a new release date trailer for The Last of Us‘ second season of the HBO’s Emmy-winning series, which stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. Although the trailer didn’t offer anything really new in terms of its story, fans did get a look at some fresh content. However, some post-apocalyptic devotees are a bit confused about the trailer’s timeline and are now questioning whether Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have made some timeline changes from the video game.

The Last of Us season one saw Ellie and Joel take on the apocalypse together and, although Joel was reluctant to have anything to do with Ellie at the start, throughout the episodes his icy heart finally warmed up to the possibility of caring for another, as he did with his late daughter, Sarah. As the pair became dependent on each other throughout the harsh world ravaged by a fungal pandemic, viewers saw Joel make a tough choice regarding Ellie’s immunity as she held the cure to the deadly outbreak. The Last of Us season one’s ending not only brought Joel’s lies to the surface but also Ellie’s heartbreaking distrust of the man she once saw as a father figure.

The Last of Us Season 2 Release Date Trailer Leaves Fans With Timeline Concerns

The first trailer for HBO’s The Last of Us season two popped up in September last year and, since then, things have been fairly quiet. To keep hungry fans at bay, a recent release date trailer showcased that the highly-anticipated show’s return is just months away from airing, as it revealed an April 2025 premiere. Now, after digesting the short clip’s contents, Last of Us fans are wondering if the timeline has been changed. The latest video seemingly hints at big changes being made to some of the characters’ timelines, which would, in turn, provide HBO viewers with a much different experience than what The Last of Us Part 2 offered gamers.

Under a post by The Last of Us News on X, which showed off a hooked scythe that the Seraphites use, one fan wondered why Abby’s storyline was brought so far forward. In the trailer, a younger Abby can be seen walking down the hospital hallway wearing a firefly pendant as alarms are going off as the aftermath of Joel’s rampage in season one rings throughout. Without spoiling anything, Joel killed someone special to Abby as he was rescuing Ellie from the operating table, so this scene is a follow-on from that event. However, the confusion lies in the fact that, in the game, this particular occurrence doesn’t materialize until much later so it seems as though these flashbacks are happening much earlier in season two rather than in season three, hence leaving fans to question what will they actually leave for the next season.

A concrete reason could be that Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann are hoping that TV viewers will have an understanding and some kind of empathy for Abby early on, as they probably don’t want a round two of what happened to the character in The Last of Us Part 2 and the abuse Laura Bailey had endured. This would certainly be a smart choice since many fans believe that there’s a possibility that Kaitlyn Dever could receive the same treatment.

Thankfully, Last of Us fans won’t have to wonder about where the show’s timeline is actually going for too long, as in only a few short months, The Last of Us Season 2 will be available to watch on HBO and stream in April.
