Summary

  • WWE 2K23 is no longer playable online, as the servers have been officially shutdown for good.
  • This follows news from 2K about “sunsetting” the game, including disabling it from purchase on digital storefronts.
  • It continues a trend of WWE 2K games having a shorter-than-expected lifespan.

WWE Should Know Better Than To Use Generative AI

Big wrestling promotions should be hiring artists instead of resorting to awful AI tigers.

In September of last year, the company outlined its plans to eventually discontinue support for the game. First, in November, the game itself, plus any add-ons, including Virtual Currency and character parks, became unavailable for purchase. Then, beginning Monday (Jan. 6), the servers were discontinued altogether.

“You will no longer be able to access any online game mode after this point, however if you already own the game, you will be able to continue to play offline modes.”

Previous WWE 2K games have also had their servers discontinued, making WWE 2K24 the only game with the ability to connect online, along with being the only game available for purchase.

It Is The Shortest Timeframe Between Closures

As outlined by Video Games Chronicle, the shutdown of the WWE 2K23 servers represents the fewest number of months between release and closure for a WWE game to date. It hasn’t even been two full years since 2K23’s release before it was pulled from digital shelves and subsequently shuttered.

Previously, that mark was owned by WWE 2K22, which also saw its server shutdown in less than two years.

In the past, WWE games have enjoyed somewhat of a longer lifespan, with 2K19 having support ending after nearly a little more than three years. 2K20 kickstarted the trend of shorter timeframes, with the game lasting only 32 months.

At this moment, it’s unclear if 2K24 will face a similar fate. The game had its final DLC pack release late last year and will likely be replaced by 2K25 within the coming months.
