Summary
- Akane Tendo is a strong, tomboy martial artist who struggles with gender norms and romance.
- Akane develops as a character and fighter through her engagement with Ranma Saotome.
- Despite initial tensions, Akane and Ranma form an effective team and grow to respect each other.
Who is the other half of Ranma 1/2? The literal answer is Ranma’s girl form, which gives Ranma Saotome a dual-gendered identity. However, Ranma 1/2’s story would feel incomplete without Ranma’s reluctant fiance and eventual friend Akane Tendo.
Akane is a unique young woman who lives against the script of what women in 1980s Japan are ‘supposed to be.’ However, her tomboyishness enamors her male classmates, who view her as a feat to conquer. However, upon meeting Ranma, who complements her strength and stubbornness, she becomes more comfortable being herself.

Akane Tendo’s Appearance
Akane Tendo is a short teenage girl with blue hair. She’s often compared to girl Ranma, who has a smaller waist and bigger breasts. However, these differences are likely due to Akane’s dense muscle mass. After all, she is a consummate martial artist who spends most of her time training. She’s even capable of breaking cinderblocks with her bare hands!
During school hours, Akane wears a blue and white dress similar to the uniforms worn by other students at Furinkan High. Outside class, she’s often seen in her white gi donning a black belt. At night, she wears comfy green pajamas with yellow and transparent triangles.
At the beginning of Ranma 1/2, Akane sports a long hairdo. However, her hair gets chopped off during a fight between Ranma and Ryoga. After some consideration, she embraces her new hair length with a cute bob.
Akane Tendo’s Personality
At first glance, Akane comes off as a tough cookie. She is very self-sufficient, rejecting romantic interests to focus on her self-improvement. Furthermore, she sees through grand gestures, like the ones performed by Tatewaki Kuno, to earn her favor. This young woman does not suffer fools and does not need anyone to swoop in and save her. Those who get on her bad side should be careful; Akane has a short fuse.
However, behind Akane’s tough exterior is a deeply sensitive human being. She doesn’t hesitate to show compassion for others, even when they piss her off, like Ranma often does. Her consideration of others gives Akane a strong nurturing instinct, resulting in her taking P-Chan as a pet. While Akane puts off a tough front, this front conceals several of Akane’s insecurities, especially regarding her femininity.
Akane Tendo’s Fighting Style
Akane Tendo received her combat training from her father, Soun Tendo, the co-owner of Anything Goes Martial Arts. This martial arts training focuses on adaptability, requiring the practitioner to do whatever it takes to achieve victory. Akane’s fiance, Ranma Saotome, trained in the same style, so their skills overlap. However, she has yet to defeat Ranma in combat.
Still, there are some abilities that Akane possesses that others do not. For instance, Akane can ice skate while Ranma and Ryoga flail once they hit the rink. This skill made Akane an asset during the Charlotte Cup match against Mikado Sanzenin and Azusa Shiratori.

Akane Tendo’s Personal Life
Akane has spent much of her life navigating her conflicting feelings. She questioned her tomboy identity as a child and compared herself to her homemaking older sister. Eventually, she grows to despise all men because she disdains the unrealistic ideals placed on women. However, during her engagement with Ranma, she begins to embrace who she is with his support (Ranma’s rude jibes aside).
Early Life and Childhood
Akane Tendo grew up with her father and two sisters, Nabiki and Kasumi. Since Akane’s mother passed when she was very young, Kasumi assumed the role of matriarch, often cooking and cleaning for the rest of the family. Unlike her feminine eldest sister, Akane was a tomboy, frequently getting into scuffles with other boys at school.
After her playground fights, Akane received treatment from the Tendos’ family doctor, Ono Tofu, whom she developed a crush on. Unfortunately, Tofu was (and still is) interested in Kasumi, and he’s unable to act normal around her. Akane assumed Dr. Tofu’s admiration for Kasumi was due to her feminine qualities, which she lacked. She tried to emulate her sister by growing out her hair and acting more ‘girly.’ Alas, nothing could sway Dr. Tofu’s infatuation with Kasumi.
Akane’s Hatred of Men
As Akane grew older, Dr. Tofu’s romantic disinterest fueled her bitterness toward men. However, he is not the leading cause for her disdain. The more likely culprit is the crowd of teenage boys who fight to win her affection every day before school. All the boys at Furinkan High treat Akane as a prize to be won rather than an individual.
Current Life and Engagement with Ranma
Akane meets her fiance, Ranma, under false pretenses. The groom-to-be and his father arrive at the Tendos in their cursed forms. Therefore, assuming Ranma is only a girl, Akane agrees to a friendly spar with him. When Akane loses the exhibition match, she takes less issue because she didn’t lose to a man. Unfortunately, her pride takes a massive blow once she discovers Ranma’s proper form (in the nude, no less).
Their introduction suggests that Ranma and Akane’s engagement fuels a relatively contentious relationship. Neither party wants to marry, and their stubbornness often leads to arguments. However, as the pair grow together, they develop mutual respect. Throughout several story arcs, including Ranma’s feud with Ryoga, the martial rhythmic gymnastics competition, and the Charlotte Cup ice-skating match, Akane and Ranma form an effective team.
While Akane and Ranma’s relationship blossoms, the former becomes more confident in her identity. For instance, she comes to terms with Dr. Tofu’s love for Kasumi, leading her to embrace her tomboy qualities rather than hide them. Ranma’s experience as a teenage girl fosters empathy that he extends to Akane, defending her personhood against male classmates who view her as an object.
Season 1’s final arc introduces Shampoo, a Chinese Amazon woman who falls in love with boy Ranma. Surprisingly, this one-sided relationship sparks jealousy within Akane, possibly hinting at a shift in feelings toward Ranma. Akane confronts Shampoo at the Furinkan High School field, and the latter erases Ranma from her memory with a special shampoo. Fortunately, Ranma cures Akane’s amnesia by teasing her into a rage. While the pair’s relationship is still in the air, Ranma and Akane may develop more romantic feelings toward each other in season 2.
