A Virtua Fighter “pre-development concept video” shown at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has fans excited to see what Ryu Ga Gotoku (RGG) Studio is crafting for the upcoming Virtua Fighter 6.
The video was aired during the keynote speech of NVIDIA founder Jensen Huang, and is exactly the kind of tech demo you’d expect to see when someone is showcasing the power of a GPU. It’s stressed that the video is “pre-development in-engine footage,” and fans are tempering their expectations because the video is too cinematic to be actual gameplay.
Captivating Combat
However, the footage is still impressive. Two opposing versions of Akira face off in hand-to-hand combat, and you can almost feel the visceral thumping of the pair’s strikes and blocks. The sweat flying off their bodies when a fist connects adds to the realism of the demo. It’s only a minor detail, but we can also see some stage destruction when Akira goes flying into wooden boxes at the end of the video.
While everyone understands that this isn’t gameplay, they can’t help but get excited when they consider the potential of Virtua Fighter 6. As one commenter says, “If they somehow manage to get the animations to look even remotely close to this in the final game, that’d be insane. Regardless, I’m excited.”
There’s also speculation that the video’s opening sequence where Akira walks across a bridge hints at an open-world feature. We know that RGG Studio is no stranger to crafting open worlds, and the game’s producers have already revealed that a story mode is being discussed (thanks, Famitsu).
The existence of a new Virtua Fighter was revealed at this past year’s Game Awards – where a trailer confirmed that RGG Studio is behind the project. Thus far, only two characters have been confirmed, series mainstay Akira and a new character named Stella. Stella heavily resembles the character Sarah Bryant, and her subtitle is “The Bridge Between Worlds”, which has led some to believe that the upcoming game is a reboot of sorts.
We don’t have a lot of information to go on yet, but RGG Studio is a team that’s known to work fast so we likely won’t have to wait too long to find out more about the next Virtua Fighter.
