Following on from its September release, The Substance became one of 2024’s highest-earning movies at the box office, accumulating more than $34 million worldwide. Not only was it provocative, bloody, and disgusting, but horror fans and critics alike sang its praises due to how smart and insightful it was, highlighting many issues facing society, especially for women. Among its well-deserved glory, will The Substance get a part two? Thankfully, its director has spoken up about a possible sequel.
The psychological body horror film tells the story of a declining film star, played by Demi Moore, who comes across a mysterious, “cure-all” black-market drug that offers her the opportunity of a lifetime to produce a much younger version of herself in a bid to renew her failing Hollywood career. Naturally, it all sounded too good to be true when her body double ended up completely taking over her life. The Substance‘s ending is partially gruesome where a monstrous hybrid of Elizabeth and Sue is created and enters the stage, shocking the living daylights of its audience.

The Substance Director Reveals if the Movie Will Get a Sequel
Even though the finale of The Substance‘s story was made fairly conclusive, quite a lot of fans craved more of its body horror movie vibes and have been wanting a continuation with the drug possibly being passed onto another unsuspecting victim. However, the movie’s director, Coralie Fargeat, has made it clear via Variety that there won’t be any sequels, to the disappointment of fans. After being asked if viewers would see a sequel to the movie, Fargeat made it clear with a resounding “Oh no” while laughing. The director continued, “The point of this movie is to bring fresh things to the world. No sequels, no prequels… I’m going to be so happy to bring something fresh to the world in a bit.”
It seems as though the film’s incredible success isn’t enough to convince its director to make another and that’s more than understandable. It’s certainly been a touching point in the industry for a long time about whether some films, and also video games, deserve the sequel treatment as it can be somewhat of a hit or miss. Fargeat’s decision about not wanting to create The Substance part two shows that she’s more than happy with the film’s outcome and doesn’t feel the need to delve into resurrecting its already stellar storyline and ending.
For fans who didn’t get to catch the movie in the cinema, The Substance will thankfully have another way for horror lovers to watch it very soon. On January 21st, 2025, The Substance will be available on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD via Mubi, so there will be no excuses left not to watch one of Demi Moore’s greatest ever performances.
