Summary
- The Penguin’s success has led to discussions of a potential second season.
- Producers hint at the possibility of another season but emphasize the need for the right idea.
- Another season will also depend on the timing of The Batman Part 2.
The Penguin is the talk of the town following an immensely successful season that recently earned Colin Farrell another Golden Globe win. Given the show’s success, talk has naturally turned to whether The Penguin could become more than just a limited series, which multiple producers have now addressed.
The Penguin is a spin-off of Matt Reeves’ 2022 film The Batman. The series expands on the story of Farrell’s Oswald Cobb and reveals how he becomes the infamous crime lord he’s known for being in DC comics. The Penguin is one of few comic book projects to break through into the prestigious circles of Hollywood in recent years, with the series raking in critical praise, fan love, and award nominations. Stars including Farrell and Cristin Milioti (who stars as Sofia Falcone) have been hailed as standouts from the series with much praise also going toward the writing and production value of the HBO show.

The Penguin Season 2 Addressed By Producers
Earlier this week the producers and stars of The Penguin attended the Golden Globe Awards where the series was nominated three times. On the red carpet before the ceremony, three of the producers of The Penguin commented on whether there might be more from the show. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc addressed that The Penguin was only intended to be a limited series, but didn’t rule out future possibilities. “We were meant to be a limited series, so I’m really proud of the first season and the story that we made. There’s more stories to tell there, for sure, if we can find the right idea or the right characters,” she told Screen Rant.
There’s more stories to tell there, for sure, if we can find the right idea or the right characters.
Producer and The Batman director Matt Reeves said something similar to The Hollywood Reporter, emphasizing another season would rely on the idea and the timing of filming on The Batman Part 2. “We are talking about doing another season… it’s really about coming up with the right idea and also about the timing… but we’re really excited about doing another season and we just have to figure out exactly the right idea,” he said. This sentiment was echoed a third time by another The Penguin producer, Dylan Clark, who told TV Line on the Golden Globes red carpet that “quiet conversations” were happening about another season with HBO. “If we could come up with an idea for what a second season might be, there’s a chance that Casey Bloys and the HBO team would want to pursue that… There have been quiet conversations about that,” he said.
While it’s clear that The Penguin was intended to be a one-and-done (and has been submitted as such in all the relevant awards categories), the immensely positive reception that the series has received could be key to more seasons. While The Penguin left Oz and the other characters in a satisfactory place, there is room for the series to continue their stories. Farrell is already expected to reprise his role in The Batman Part 2, which could potentially set up more story for the character in a second season. Milioti’s Sofia was also left with a loose plot thread that could pave the way for more story for the character as she connects with her sister, Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz). Wherever the producers choose to take the story, it’s clear that audiences are hungry for more out of Reeves’ The Batman universe and The Penguin could be an established format for more successful stories in this world.
