Developer Krafton is introducing the first “co-playable character” AI partner for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, designed to “perceive, plan, and act like human players.” This new PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds AI partner utilizes Nvidia ACE technology, which allows companions to act and talk like real players.

The rise of artificial intelligence has accelerated over the past few years. The term AI has previously been used in video games to describe certain NPCs that operate with a predefined set of movements and dialogues. Many horror games have relied on AI to create unsettling and realistic enemies, making the experience more threatening for players. However, none of these have fully replicated the actual feeling of playing with a human being, as AI can sometimes feel clunky and unnatural. Now, Nvidia is introducing a whole new type of AI companion.

PUBG Studio’s New Game Seems to Take the Opposite Approach as Helldivers 2

PUBG Studios is branching out with a brand-new project, and its approach appears to be an interesting mirror to Helldivers 2.

In an Nvidia blog post, the company revealed the first co-playable character AI partner that will be introduced to PUBG, powered by Nvidia ACE. This new technology will allow players to team up on the battlefield with a companion that can think and dynamically adapt to their strategies. It can follow players’ goals and assist them with various tasks, such as looting PUBG drops, driving vehicles, and more. The AI partner is powered by a small language model that emulates human decision-making.

PUBG’s First Co-Playable AI Character Gameplay Trailer

In the revealed trailer, the player speaks directly to the AI companion, asking it to find specific ammo. The AI is also able to communicate with the player, warn them when it spots an enemy, and follow any instructions given. The Nvidia ACE technology will also be implemented in other games, such as Naraka: Bladepoint and inZOI.

As explained in the blog post, this new technology opens up a whole new world of possibilities for video game creators, allowing them to envision games in entirely new ways. Nvidia ACE could enable a new type of gameplay “where interactions are driven exclusively by player prompts and AI-generated responses,” expanding the number of video game genres in the future. Even though the use of AI in video games has faced criticism in the past, it is undeniable how revolutionary this new technology could be for the medium moving forward.

PUBG has undergone significant changes over the years, but this new feature could set it apart. However, it remains to be seen how effective and useful it will ultimately be for players.
