Obsidian Tells Fans To Watch Out For "Scammer" Impersonating An Employee

Summary

  • An Obsidian worker has called out a Twitter account impersonating a studio employee.
  • The account has almost 1,000 followers and claims to be a “PR Agent” at Obsidian. It appears to be trying to trick content creators.
  • It has been sharing many Obsidian-related posts, including those that are making hateful comments against the company and its games.

An Obsidian community manager is telling fans to be wary of scammers, as someone appears to be impersonating a studio employee. While it’s unclear why the account owner is pretending to work at Obsidian, their description mentions wanting to work with “amazing creators” suggesting that they are trying to dupe content creators.

However, the posting history of the account is also bizarre, as they have shared many posts that are anti-DEI, and make disparaging remarks against Obsidian. These posts were made when Obsidian’s next game, Avowed, became the latest target of the “anti-woke” movement on social media, much like Dragon Age: The Veilguard before it, and The Witcher 4 afterwards.

Fans and content creators are told to be mindful of scammers

“Be on the lookout for scammers,” says Aarik Dorobiala, senior community manager at Obsidian. “This person does not work for us and we have no idea who they are.”

True enough, there is no sign of a Jake Mitchell working for Obsidian. The account is still live at the time of writing and has 933 followers. It claims to be a PR agent for Obsidian, and is “always on the lookout for amazing creators”.

As for their posts, it’s a mixed bag. Many of the reposts, especially the older ones, make hate comments against Obsidian, label Avowed “woke”, and even encourage others to boycott the game. However, there are also plenty of neutral and positive posts about the studio being shared, so this might just be a bot sharing anything to do with Obsidian.

Could Avowed Be The Next Skyrim?

I suspect being the next Skyrim is more about your game being in the right place at the right time, but the game still has to be able to deliver the goods. Do you think Avowed looks to have what it takes?

Of course, given the current climate, some have assumed that the account has been set up to stoke the flames of the culture war and the hate campaign that several developers and studios are facing right now. While it’s possible that this is the case, especially as the social media posts of developers are frequently brought into the mix, sharing anti-DEI posts would give the game away a bit. So, it’s also very possible that they’re just sharing anything related to Obsidian, and are actually trying to dupe content creators with false partnership offers.

We’ll have to wait and see if the account gets taken down or if the owner deleted it. However, it’s at least being called out by Obsidian, whatever its purpose is.
