Marvel Rivals has been going strength to strength recently, and with the excitement and buzz surrounding its first proper season, along with the fairly incredible player retention, I think it’s fair to say that Overwatch has a new rival.
Marvel Rivals has essentially come along and given jaded Overwatch players pretty much everything they’ve wanted from their game, besides maybe some nerfs and a better ping system, and now it may be going even further, truly sticking the knife into Overwatch and Blizzard by potentially launching a full-blown PvE mode.
Marvel Rivals Might Have A PvE Mode In Development
Earlier today, a Marvel Rivals insider going by RivalsLeaks revealed that a source of theirs claimed to have experienced some kind of PvE mode in the game, probably via testing at developer NetEase. They claim that this happened “some time ago”, but that a tag that was discovered in the game’s files by another insider called RivalsInfo has suggested that it may still be in development.

Marvel Rivals Has Too Many Heroes For Its Own Good
NetEase has gone so hard on the Rivals launch that it has me worried for its future.
It’s worth pointing out that there’s still a lot of uncertainty about whether NetEase still has plans for this tag, thus the game mode, or if it’s just the remnants of something that was worked on and then scrapped. Given that PvE was a highly requested feature by Overwatch fans, and that Marvel Rivals does have some interesting story stuff tucked away in comics and hero descriptions, it’s very possible it’s being worked on behind the scenes.
The Overwatch fans among you will no doubt be aware that PvE is probably still a sore spot for Blizzard. It justified Overwatch 2 with the promise of a fully fleshed-out PvE mode with story missions and skill trees, only to significantly scale it back and anger pretty much everyone in the process. If Marvel Rivals can deliver something similar to those plans, it really will feel like the new kid on the block kicking the old man while he’s down.
