James Gunn Welcomes Jason Momoa to DCU As Lobo
James Gunn, DC Studios’s co-chairman, welcomed Jason Momoa, who joined DCU as Lobo in Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow.
Momoa is visibly thrilled to portray his favorite character from the DC comics. He took to Instagram and shared a video of him holding the screenplay for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and it was marked with “FOR LOBO’S EYES ONLY.” In the clip, he is sitting by a fire, and Momoa is in his Lobo character, holding a lit cigar in one hand. Lobo is an intergalactic bounty hunter and one of the popular anti-heroes from the DC comics. He is often depicted with a cigar in his hand or clenched between his teeth. So Momoa’s choice of adding a cigar in the video was more than just an aesthetic choice; it was aligned with his character, Lobo. Momoa also added a photo of him with his girlfriend, Adria Arjona, and they appeared to be dancing or rocking, visibly celebrating his casting as Lobo.
In a separate post on Instagram, Momoa confirmed his Lobo casting by sharing a quote from a previous interview where he expressed interest in playing the character. “So Lobo was…I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,'” part of the quote read. “I mean listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a f*ck yeah.” Gunn saw his post and the filmmaker made a warm comment by welcoming Momoa to the DCU. Meanwhile, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch offered to do a Lobo feature. “Let’s do a Lobo feature,” Leitch commented.
Based on Momoa’s post, he is visibly happy and in a celebratory mood with his girlfriend. It is understandable since Momoa has always wanted to play the character. In his interview with Fandango in 2023 to promote the Aquaman sequel, the Fast X actor admitted that he auditioned for Batman but had always known it wasn’t for him, so when he got a callback, he thought he was playing Lobo. He was surprised when he learned that he was cast as Aquaman as he couldn’t see himself in the said character until it was explained to him that he was fit to portray the role.
Momoa pulled it off as Aquaman, even if he was hesitant at first to take on the role. He will surely excel as Lobo, especially because he loves the character from the beginning. Also, his build, aura, and voice make him a complete package for the eccentric character. Momoa’s long hair, huge size, and rebellious vibes, will surely make Lobo a more interesting character on the big screen.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
