How To Defeat Chester Stoddart, The Black-Hearted White Knight In Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana frequently surprises you with what’s going on with either the plot or the boss you’re currently facing. It can be hard to remember that this is a remaster of the spiritual successor, which was more or less a remake of the third installment in the series, showing how well this has held up over the years.

Chester Stoddart, The Black-Hearted White Knight Overview In Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana

Chester Stoddart, the Black-Hearted White Knight, pointing his blade at Adol in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana.

Chester Stoddart, the Black-Hearted White Knight, will be the third boss you encounter in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana. You will face off against him in the depths of the Illburns Ruins region, which can be a bit of a slog to get through in and of itself, making it the perfect way to culminate this section of Adol’s journey.

It should be noted that you cannot upgrade your equipment here or even after this encounter for a little while, but you should be more than fine so long as you obtained the Small Shield and Katol Elixir within the Illburns Ruins and have a fully leveled Sword and Armor!

Recommended Level

Level 13

In addition to the Small Shield, Katol Elixir, and upgraded Sword and Armor, we strongly recommend being at least Level 13 before taking on Chester Stoddart within the Illburns Ruins. Fortunately, you should be around there if you thoroughly explore the region, killing everything and anything in sight.

If you meet those requirements and are still finding this encounter to be a bit too rough, you can attempt farming some more to reach Level 14 or 15 or can run the entire way back to Redmont Town and upgrade the Small Shield with the Raval Ore you obtained in the Illburns Ruins. We don’t recommend doing that, but that’s always an option!

Dying to a boss in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana will give you the option to temporarily lower the difficulty, which is another option if you’re finding this encounter too intense and don’t want to farm Levels or travel the whole way back to Redmont Town!

How To Defeat Chester Stoddart, The Back-Hearted White Knight In Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana

Adol landing the finishing blow on Chester Stoddart within the Illburns Ruins in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana.

Despite being the third boss fight of Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana, Chester Stoddart doesn’t have too many attacks he can toss out but uses what he has paired with his ability to deal significant damage and his immense speed to keep you on your toes, making it the more challenging one so far.

He has about five to six attacks that can be troublesome to deal with at first, but once you have them dialed in and know when to attack, you should have him defeated in no time. It won’t be as much of a walk in the park as the previous two encounters, but if you got through them, Chester won’t be that much worse!

Chester Stoddart – Dagger Toss

Chester Stoddart throwing several Daggers at Adol in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana.

A common action of Chester’s in this battle will be his Dagger Toss, having him hurl several Daggers toward Adol in a spaced-out pattern, with some being delayed, which can be tricky to avoid depending on where you are and when he decides to implement it.

When Chester tosses out his first Dagger, create space between you and him, and begin running in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion, having the Daggers sail behind you, missing you completely. If you are close enough to him when he starts throwing them, you can hit him, causing him to stop. This allows you to get a few more hits in before he moves on to something else!

Chester Stoddart – Charging Lunge

His Charging Lunge is another common move in Chester’s arsenal, but it is crucial to get down to a science as it will provide you with the most damage opportunities. He will stop his movement and begin emitting a red light around himself, accompanied by a unique sound as he charges his attack.

After he charges up, Chester will dash forward with tremendous speed and force, dealing massive damage if he connects. At first, this can seem a bit impossible to avoid, but once you learn how to punish it properly, it will be your favorite move of his, as it guarantees you big damage!

Adol – Charging Lunge Counter

To punish Chester’s Charging Lunge attack, create some space when you see him begin charging up his attack and then leap over him the moment he dashes toward you. This will cause him to miss you entirely, placing you behind him and allowing you to follow up with several strikes before he does something else.

Don’t forget to utilize your Boost if you have it, activating it right as you land, allowing you to unleash tons of slashes on him in rapid succession, dealing mass damage to him. Always be on the lookout for this attack, as it will be the best way for you to defeat him. It can be dodged consistently and is very commonly used by Chester!

Chester Stoddart – Barrier

Chester Stoddart activating his Barrier to make himself immune to Adol's attacks in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana.

While not as common as the first two actions, it pops up enough to be a problem if you don’t know how to deal with it properly, and that’s Chester’s Barrier. When he activates it, he will place a blueish-purple Barrier in front of himself, seemingly preventing any incoming damage from Adol.

However, while it does negate all incoming physical attacks, it does not protect him from magic attacks, meaning your Ignis Bracelet will work just fine here. So, whenever you see him toss this Barrier up, charge your Ignis Bracelet and launch a fireball at him for some decent damage!

Chester Stoddart – Sword Strikes

Chester unleashing a series of strikes with his sword against Adol in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana.

An even less common action of Chester’s is his Sword Strike, where he rushes Adol down and attempts to land a barrage of slashes on him with his sword. If he lands this attack, he will deal tons of damage to you, so be wary of it, even if it isn’t all that challenging to evade.

Even if it is a high-damaging attack, it is one of the most easily telegraphed ones in his arsenal, as he literally just starts sprinting at you. As soon as you see him stop what he’s doing and begin making a beeline to you in a dead sprint, run away from him, making him start slashing at nothing.

Your Ignis Bracelet will also be useful here, as you can launch a charged-up fireball at him as he mindlessly slashes the air for some free and decent damage!

Chester Stoddart – Dagger Dash

Chester tossing his Dagger and teleporting around the arena in Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana.

Dropping Chester’s health down slightly past halfway is when things start heating up a bit, as Chester will begin violently teleporting around the stage while tossing Daggers. During this portion of the fight, he will mainly only do this action, making it nearly impossible to hit him.

Unfortunately, you cannot do much at this point, as you will be waiting for a specific attack to capitalize on, so you will just have to evade his constant dashing and barrage of Daggers by running away from him. It can get a bit tedious, especially if he doesn’t seem to be stopping, but the payoff is worth it!

Chester Stoddart – Dashing Lunge

During his violent Dagger Dash attacks, Chester will quickly try sneaking in a Charging Lunge attack, mixing it in with his teleportation techniques. This is telegraphed by him briefly charging up as he did earlier, but it is significantly faster, making it hard to catch at times.

As soon as he is done charging up, he will teleport and unleash the Dashing Lunge attack, which deals much more damage than before and is substantially faster and harder to dodge. Fortunately, there is a way you can see where he’s coming from, allowing you to counter it completely.

Much like the Dagger Dash attack from earlier, where Chester just teleports nonstop, you will see a red light emanating from where he’s about to appear. The moment this red light appears near you, run toward it and jump, sending you over his attack, allowing you to follow up with your own.

He will essentially only do this and the previous action over and over again until defeated, which can be exhausting considering how fast this phase of the fight is and how little you will get to attack. Don’t forget to use your Boost when it’s ready. Patience is key here!
