The Ys series remains a popular, but well-kept secret in the JRPG game world. Here’s how every game fits into the series’ timeline.

Galbalan is quite unlike most bosses in the game, relying much more on gimmicks and the full usage of your moveset to really beat him. Galbalan is a challenge of everything the game has put your way. And if you’ve beat everything so far, you cna beat him.

Preparation For Galbalan, Sinister Marauder From Afar

adol descending into the seat of evil to battle galbalan in ys memoire the oath in felghana.

If you managed to beat Garland before this, then you should already be up-to-speed on what it takes to beat Galbalan. That said, let’s get a quick breakdown of everything that could help you.

  • Be as close to level 50 as you can. More HP and higher stats in general will be a massive help, even a single level.
  • Make sure you have the full Raval set of armor and shield, and the Brave Sword, entirely upgraded to level three.
  • Get the Talisman of War from Randolph by giving him the Jade Ring from trading Raval Ore with Antonio.
  • Purchase the Spirit Necklace back in Redmont for 60,000 Gold.
  • If you have money left over, buy as many Katol Elixirs as you can, too.
  • Make sure you have every Ruby. The Ignis Bracelet will be your most used here.

And that about covers it. You’re going to take a few hits against Galbalan, so having the best armor and weapons is the highest priority here.

How To Defeat Galbalan, Sinister Marauder From Afar

Galbalan does not look like something from this world, and indeed his name seems to imply he might indeed be something extraterrestrial altogether. That makes the entire way they fight in this battle all the more unusual. In fact, you can’t even damage him at first.

Galbalan operates in phases. The first is the most complex, but also the slowest, giving you a reasonable amount of time to learn him. He will start by using two different moves. The first will have him sending a whip of fire your way. Just jump over this. The second will have him shoot a volley of fireballs. Try to outrun them, or use the Terra Bracelet to charge into them and destroy them.

After a short while, he will fire ice platforms onto the ground which begin to rise. Hop onto one of them quickly, and start shooting fireballs towards the glowing section of Galbalan. This will cause his eye to become exposed down below. Use this opportunity to fire even more fireballs his way. This is the only way to deal damage at the moment.

After his eye opens, he will use his arms in new ways, dragging them across the full length of the arena. Jump over them while still attempting to hit the eye with fireballs. Rinse and repeat this process until he enters his second phase.

This is where it gets a bit more challenging. As this phase begins, Galbalan will suck away all of your magical energy and stop it regenerating as well. He will attack with even more attacks simultaneously too, sending orbs that drag lasers across the arena while also slamming the arena with his two arms.

The lasers are hard to avoid, though they can be jumped over with good timing. The eye also stays open for you to strike, while the arms can be damaged too. So you have more options to attack, but more ways of being attacked as well. Galbalan will sometimes summon the ice platforms still, so make sure to hop on when they appear both to avoid the lasers and arms, but so you can perform a descending slash on the arms.

Periodically, Galbalan will pull back before slamming into the arena, causing shards of ice to rise across it all. This requires very precise timing to dodge, though using the Terra Bracelet grants a bit more leniency.

After you’ve dealt enough damage to the arms, your MP will start to regenerate, giving you a chance to attack the eye for more damage.

Once you’ve whittled his HP down enough, the third and final phase will begin. A wonderful call back to the likes of Ganondorf, Galbalan will fire out a great orb that you must hit back-and-forth at increasing speed until it finally hits him. You have to do this multiple times though, all the while avoiding some of Galbalan’s most dangerous moves.

There are two new moves he utilises here. The first summons a puff of smoke that fires out a mass of projectiles. Stay opposite it and it is fairly easy to avoid. The second is just like Garland’s vortex move, sucking you in and trapping you in an unblockable attack. Avoid this move at all costs, even if it means letting the orb fly out of the arena.

If you do get caught by the vortex, use Double Boost. The damage boost is irrelevant during this phase, so take advantage of the damage reduction and healing instead.

After you’ve batted the orb back at Galbalan a few times, he will finally be defeated. Watch your final cutscenes to see peace returned to Felghana and Adol depart on yet another adventure.
