Ghost of Tsushima Gets Anime By Psycho-Pass Creator

Summary

  • Anime adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima: Legends in 2027 with Gen Urobuchi writing the story.
  • Takanobu Mizuno directing the series, handled by Kamikaze Douga, Crunchyroll, and Aniplex.
  • A live-action movie adaptation has been announced, featuring a Japanese cast primarily in Japanese.

Ghost of Tsushima, one of Sucker Punch’s most famous games, is getting an anime adaptation. Ghost of Tsushima came out in 2020 and has been highly praised by several critics and media outlets, even scoring 40/40 on Famitsu (a rare achievement for Japanese games, with foreign games facing even more difficulty in receiving the maximum score).

The original game is set in 13th century Japan, after a Mongol fleet attempts to invade Japan, starting on the island of Tsushima (this is based on a real event). Jin Sakai, nephew of Lord Shimura, is trying to lead the five great clans of the island to fight the invaders, but the Mongol army has the technological upper hand and the battle is a disaster for the Japanese. Sakai embarks on a journey to find revenge and take the island out of the control of the Mongol people.

Ghost of Tsushima actually had some substantial content cut before it launched, including a different backstory for Jin and an entire location.

What We Know So Far

The anime will be based on Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, and is already slated for release in 2027. So far, not much information has been revealed, but it’s been confirmed that Gen Urobuchi is writing the story. Urobuchi is best known as the creator of Psycho-Pass and part of the team behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica, for which he also wrote scripts and the series composition. Some international fans affectionately refer to him as “Urobutcher,” because he doesn’t spare characters if their deaths are necessary for the plot, so we can expect the series to deal with mature themes.

Takanobu Mizuno will be directing the series. Mizuno directed the first episode of Star Wars: Visions (for those who haven’t watched it, each episode is created by a different team and studio, with unrelated stories), titled “The Duel” — and considered by many to be one of the best of the anthology.

Sony, Aniplex and Crunchyroll are involved in the production, so it’s likely this series will be streamed exclusively on Crunchyroll upon its premiere. Aniplex is involved, but studio Kamikaze Douga (Pop Team Epic, Batman Ninja) is handling the animation, and not one of its subsidiary studios, like A-1 Pictures or CloverWorks, will be handling the animation.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends

Legends is a multiplayer online installment of the Ghost of Tsushima franchise based on Japanese mythology and folklore. The player can choose one of the four classes (Samurai, Hunter, Ronin and Assassin) to play with friends or through online matchmaking. Like many online games, it’s not too story-driven, which leaves a lot of room for the anime staff to create a new plot.

A live-action movie adaptation of the original game has also been announced, and director Chad Stahelski has already stated he wants the movie to feature a Japanese cast and be primarily in Japanese, rather than English. After Shogun’s success, it might be the perfect time for this kind of adaptation. However, there hasn’t been much news about the production since then (there have been rumors of a cast, but it’s still unconfirmed).

Ghost of Tsushima anime will be based on Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. Gen Urobuchi is writing the scripts and Takanobu Mizuno is directing the series.
