Summary
- Crysis stands as one of gaming’s most important franchises, particularly from a graphical standpoint.
- That said, at one point, real scientists thought it would lead to an advancement in nanotechnology.
- As it turns out, Crytek’s founder was invited to a conference because some scientists thought the nanosuit was real.
While we haven’t heard anything new about Crysis 4 since its announcement in 2022, and we haven’t had any official releases since 2021s Crysis Remastered Trilogy, there was a point in time when Crysis was everything.
There’s a reason why the — “Can it run Crysis?” — meme is still so everlasting. Because at one point, Crysis was the benchmark for gaming, even necessitating a patch so that it could run on more hardware. As it turns out, there was a brief moment where actual scientists thought Crysis could be the benchmark for real-life technology, too.
Wait, It’s All Fake?
In an interview with PC Gamer for its monthly magazine, Cevat Yerli, Crytek’s founder and former CEO, revealed that he had received an invitation to an actual nanotechnology conference because of the design of Crysis’ nanosuit, a key tenant of the franchise.
According to Yerli, the team at Crytek determined that in order for Crysis to set itself apart from other games, its main character needed a unique suit. “This idea of a programmable suit came up,” Yerli revealed, before noting it wasn’t long before the suit’s abilities came into play. Next was the design. “We went through hundreds of concept art, and they all looked like Marvel [characters].”
Before long, “this muscle suit came up, with nanofibres that would then connect with your muscle tissues and sync with your movements.” That was the nanosuit, and with design in-hand, Crytek elected to advertise it everywhere, which drew the attention of actual nanotechnology people.
Yerli shared that he “got invited to a nanotechnology conference as a keynote speaker.” That’s when he had to break it to them that it was a game. “I said, ‘Excuse me, but this is all fake.'” Unfortunately, all of these years later, and the nanosuit still isn’t a real thing. But for at least one moment, scientists thought that Crytek had cracked the code.
