Blizzard has announced that the cost of World of Warcraft subscriptions, Tokens, cosmetics, and change and transfer features is increasing – but not for everyone. Players in both Australia and New Zealand will soon be spending more money than before on various WoW features, after another increase in costs from back in 2020. There is a small, temporary saving grace though, as recurring subscriptions from before the price increase comes into effect will not go up until later in the year.
“Blizzard regularly conducts reviews of pricing in the many regions and currencies where World of Warcraft is available. From time to time, pricing changes are necessary based on a variety of factors,” community manager Randy ‘Kaivax’ Jordan writes on the Blizzard forums. “This includes global and regional market conditions. Following careful evaluation, we want to provide notice that we’ll soon adjust the Australian and New Zealand dollar (AUD and NZD) prices of available services and subscriptions for World of Warcraft.”
According to Jordan, these Australian and New Zealand price changes will start on Friday February 7. If you’re a recurring MMO subscriber before then (11:59pm on Thursday February 6 to be exact), you’ll actually keep the previous subscription price you’ve been paying until Wednesday August 6. That’s a grace period of six months if you already have a recurring subscription, but new players won’t be as lucky.
“We recognize that individuals have numerous entertainment choices, and do not take pricing adjustments lightly,” Jordan continues. “We greatly value players choosing to spend their time with World of Warcraft, and remain dedicated to ensuring that the game continues to offer Australian and New Zealand players excellent entertainment value.”
The price increases aren’t exactly small either. Right now, one month of a WoW sub is $19.95 AUD, and it’s going up to $23.95 – that’s an increase of $4. That increase stays roughly the same as you go up to a 12-month sub, the price of which will jump from $207 AUD to $249 – an increase of $42. You can see all the old and new Australian and New Zealand prices below.
This isn’t the first time WoW sub prices in the region have been increased, either: Blizzard raised various costs for Australian players back in 2020.
As for why this subscription price increase is happening, Blizzard itself doesn’t give a clear reason. That said, the value of the Australian dollar, especially compared to the US dollar, has been on a sharp downward trajectory recently.
