As PCGamesN’s resident roguelike player, I’m always on the lookout for what to recommend next. Today it’s a game called SOG: Vietnam, which presents itself as a blend of top-down shooters like Enter The Gungeon and tile-based tactics like Into The Breach. So if you’re looking for a more methodical roguelike, and one that’s filled with plenty of calculated planning, look no further than the game’s brand-new Steam demo.
Every run in SOG: Vietnam starts with you being dropped into a procedurally generated map. From here you need to survey the tiles around you for enemies, wild animals, or traps. Everything is turn-based so it’s up to you to decide on exploring, fighting, or even calling resources to help with a battle. You can sneak through the night and sabotage communications, or go all guns blazing in Enter the Gungeon fashion and face everything head-on. I love a roguelike game that offers plenty of tactical choices, and SOG: Vietnam has many of them.
If the image didn’t already give it away, SOG: Vietnam is also incredibly violent. You’ll be engaging in gunfights, calling in napalm strikes, and doing plenty of covert operations. Your tactics are brutal, and you’ll leave a trail of blood in your wake. Combat isn’t pretty, and SOG: Vietnam knows it. Aesthetically, it feels a bit like Hotline Miami, especially the levels set in the Hawaiian jungle in Hotline Miami 2. There’s also a hint of Broforce, and its satire of militaristic gung-ho – the more you lean into SOG’s nastiest tactics and weapons, the more your playable soldier seems to be affected.
SOG: Vietnam also has a variety of terrain tiles. These can be houses, dense jungles, raised platforms, boulders, and more, with each forcing you to use different tactics, weapons, and positioning to come out on top. Think of it like all the different tiles from Into The Breach, where each can help or hinder you depending on your strategy.
While every mission is different, coming back alive will only serve you well in the long run. Medals and perks can open up even more strategies for future missions, giving you extra choices. Whether it’s grenades, C4, health packs, ammo, or meal rations, you’ll want to make sure you carefully outfit your soldier ahead of time.
According to the demo’s Steam page, this early version of SOG: Vietnam has 13 story chapters, nine terrain types, eight perks, eight items, and three enemy types, so you’ve got more than enough to keep you busy until the full launch.
You can check out the demo for SOG: Vietnam right now, with the full launch scheduled for Q4 2025. The game is on Steam here.
